TWENTY ONE generally signifies the commencement of adulthood and the independence that comes with it.. However in true Tongan form although we are gifted the symbolic 21st key from our parents of this special milestone, as a form of respectful gesture to our parents we then return it which in turn symbolises that although in the western world we are considered 'adults' we are still honouring our parents' guidance and their teachings regardless of being considered adults..A young Tongan woman whom has reached this milestone and practices prudence and chastity is highly regarded within her family and community alike and is therefore celebrated in a very elaborate manner..
