Glenorchy Rowing Club

Glenorchy Rowing Club Our club motto is 'fun, fitness and friendship' and we welcome anyone who wants to row. New members are always welcome.

The Glenorchy Rowing Club is supported by the Tasmanian Government. The Glenorchy Rowing Club, sits on the banks of the beautiful and sometimes moody River Derwent in Montrose Bay not far from Hobart's world famous MONA. We are a small and friendly club where every member is an individual and not just one of the crowd and we welcome new members. The club accommodates both social rowers who want to

maintain fitness and make new friends; and the more competitive types who compete in Regattas both locally and interstate - past members have even been to the Olympics. It's up to you to decide how you want to row; the club is here to support you. Over the last three years, the club has acquired several coastal rowing boats, which are very popular in Europe. Coastal rowing boats are wider, heavier and more stable in the rougher weather conditions that are common in our part of the river. This means that our rowers can get out on the water more often than just relying on regular sculls. Our clubrooms have a great range of equipment and facilities for rowing including a small gym and a hall with a kitchen that is available for hire. We would love to hear from you if you have any questions about becoming a member or if you'd like to hire our clubrooms for a special event. To ensure that your enquiry isn't missed by our hardworking volunteers, please reach out to us via email: [email protected]

With our memberships and opportunities to compete increasing, we need a larger trailer to accommodate all the boats that need transport to the regattas.

2024 Head of the Yarra What an awesome weekend. We managed to take 2 8’s to the race. Some of us had rowed last year and a few it was their first go. It was a privilege to have had such a fantastic weekend with such like minded strong and adventurous human beings. We did great times. The ladies 8 did 41 mins and the mixed crew were 45 mins. With a head wind and an outgoing tide not to mention the 32 degree temperature, increasing to 37 degrees later in the day. We did pretty good. Thank-you to Sophie and Denise whom both coxed for the first time. Such a huge and technical race you both did brilliantly. Another adventure done and dusted onto the next one. But also still have to mention the supporters whom could do without. On the proceeding two days there have been dinners and birthday celebrations and now bare foot bowls may be an annual occurrence.

Sunday we participated in the inaugural Head Of the Huon race 7.7kms from Franklin to Huonville. Then a leisurely row back to Franklin down stream. We had two 8 boats in the race. One all women’s crew and a mixed 8. We had the privilege of some Bucks and New Norfolk rowers join us in this adventure. Our new boat the Tenasious had its first race with us as well as some members that hadn’t been in any races at all before. It was fantastic to see the Sense of achievement they had after the race and they all wanted to come back for more. Some would say it’s just for the merchandise to get a T-Shirt with your name on it. (Guilty as charged 😜. But seriously it’s for the fun the camaraderie, friendship and adventure. Thanks to support crew and trainers and coxens as well.

Well what a Fantastic weekend we have had. The beautiful Eve and Chris from the Derwent rowing club invited us to join with them on the Royal flying doctors 75km Rowathon. Held in Mildura VIC and rowing to Wentworth NSW. What an adventure. There were three 25 km legs with some doing one leg some did two and some magnificent Amazons did three. Definitely say do this one for sure. 👍

What an absolutely AMAZING week we have had. At the Australian National Masters. The experience was second to none we had a gold medal won by our newest master Alex. We had a final for our 4 in which we came seventh and a semi final in the double. We were all so proud of each other’s achievements. Our club is just the most supportive environment.

This weekend was not only a stunner but an amazing experience for all the crew. Tas Masters. We had great water and some really great times from the boats. Got our catches in earlier (we are getting better). Our newbies Jaith, Fliss and Michelle. Did the most amazing job on and off the water. And to the rest of us big massive pats on the back. A fun weekend. Comment over heard from another club of the weekend from Libby. That club has a lot of fun.

Lake Barrington SP6. Glenorchy competed in multiple races. Everyone of us had success on the water. From July winning and rowing in her first singles race. To penni and Nicky almost winning on a photo finish. Improving times is our bucket rigged four. The eight race where we lost time with a big crab but kicked into high gear and was catching up to the pack. Jaith rowing in his first Regatta races ever and having the time of his life. To having Ange back in the boat was fantastic. We all improved our times and most importantly we all had an absolute ball doing it. Of course we couldn’t have done it without our support crew umpire Keith and our super cox coach Denise. Not to mention the crew that stayed home
Doing things hind the scenes.

Today we participated in the Sandy Bay Coastal regatta. Teaching the young kids how to race in the rough conditions was so much fun launching and finishing on the beach. Was great that it was windy, made for some good action and gave them a great feel for what these awesome boats can really do. The smile on everyone’s faces as they jumped out was priceless. We so enjoyed the whole experience and we had many inquiries about the boats. Thankyou to TUBC for the lend of their trailer made transport much easier. Thankyou to everyone that came today and were involved fantastic club spirit.
