Yurts have been used as shelter for at least three thousand years and are very common in Mongolia. A high percentage of the population still retains a nomadic lifestyle and yurts can be seen throughout the country, particularly in mountainous regions in Central and Western Mongolia. The yurts are practical, comfortable, and portable allowing people to live in a nomadic way, moving every few months.
Although Montville Yurts have been based on traditional Mongolian yurts they been redesigned using light weight poles of bamboo and the principles of geodesic domes. We love being able to bring customers these unique handmade yurts. None are mass produced and all are made with skill and attention to detail. As far as we can find, there is no-one else on the planet doing what our yurt builder is doing; which is building and working bamboo structures in this style.
It is really exciting to me that market demand for handmade goods has risen exponentially in the last few years. People like to know that the products they buy were made by a real person––that the products they’re spending money on have a sense of authenticity attached to them. Its a real move away from the cookie-cutter options of repetitive factory made products, consumers are embracing bespoke in numbers not seen since the the1970s.
What else can a yurt be used for?
Larger yurts provide a luxurious outdoor event experience for Weddings comfortably holding up to 90 people, are an ideal setting for outdoor corporate lunches or dinners and perfect for music stages at festivals. The smaller yurt sizes have multiple uses from corporate functions, chill-out spaces or promotional activities at festivals and outdoor events, yoga classes, massage tents, food & wine tastings, market stalls, backyard parties, sleeping tents and ‘glamping’ trips.
Why yurts not a marquee?
Yurts are a great shape, being basically round in their footprint. Round is a much more natural shape in this world, and people feel that. Water and energy flow more easily around curves; squares and corners create stale zones where the dirt and dust collect – that’s bad Feng Shui. Feng Shui literally means wind and water; this is the easiest way to understand it, how do wind and water like to move? They like to flow, they like to be constantly turning. Rarely do you see them go in straight lines unless man has made them do that. People naturally pick up on the good Feng Shui of the yurts whether they are aware of it or
Let’s talk specifically about weddings, what’s great about getting married in a yurt?
Getting married in a yurt is all about bringing the landscape in - creating and outdoor room if you like. The Sunshine Coast is an incredible region for this purpose. Up here in in Montville we are close to Maleny with expansive coastal views and dramatic mountain landscapes. And then within a easy 30 minute drive we have some of the most amazing beaches stretched between Noosa in the north to Caloundra to the south. By building a yurt amongst these landscapes you are really creating a very special venue for your friends and family on you wedding day. Our bamboo yurts use light and strong bamboo poles and peg firmly to the ground. They do not use messy guy ropes for support, so always look impressively clean, fresh and open – ready to add your personal stamp and creative flair. Each Montville Yurt provides suitable cover and shade and is designed to have entirely open or enclosed by adding side walls if you prefer. It is the chance to say I do with an amazing view.
