Our Story
HOWARD VINEYARD | Howard Vineyard wines are Estate grown from our family owned vineyards in the Adelaide Hills. The winery takes its name form pioneering horticulturist Amos William Howard who, in 1889, discovered subterranean clover growing naturally on the site where the Howard Vineyard Cellar Door stands today. Our Cellar Door is a warm, welcoming environment where you are welcome to share our wines and eat our food.
THE ADELAIDE HILLS | Our Mt Barker and Lobethal Vineyards were planted over 2 decades ago. During that time, we have built a reputations for premium grape growing in the Adelaide Hills, one of Australia’s most exciting regions. We are located only 25 minutes out of the city but rise to an elevation of around 350m at Mount Barker and over 460m at our Lobethal Vineyard. The Adelaide Hills, due to it’s altitude, is significantly cooler and has a higher rainfall than neighbouring regions with vast variations in microclimates across the hills and valleys of the region.
MT BARKER VINEYARD (HOWARD VINEYARD) 24 Ha | Established in 1998 the Howard Vineyard site is a warmer vineyard in a cooler climate. A slightly higher than average temperature and slightly lower rainfall in comparison to our Lobethal vineyard. This with our central approach of sustainable viticulture (including intensive hand pruning, shoot thinning, bunch thinning, low yields and hand picking) we are able to achieve optimal ripeness for Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as world class Rosé from these varieties.
LOBETHAL VINEYARD 36Ha | Established in 1998 we believe that we have one of the finest sites for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc across the Adelaide Hills, with a broad variation of traditional clones well suited to the Adelaide Hills. This allows us to experiment within our own vineyard in pursuit of our passionate project to produce great wines. Due to Lobethal cool temperatures and high altitude we retain great natural acidity, one of the hallmarks of our wines.
