our whole hearts. Our journey at Maxi-Jazz Dance Studio started with founder Maxine Johnson in 1987, originally known as Maxi-Jazz School Of Dance. Maxine created a studio culture full of love, support, amazing performance opportunities for all students, and a leader in the dance industry for over 20 years. In 2007, Maxine’s daughter, Ylanda Robinson took over as Principal, continuing to lead the studio to new heights and continuing the family culture and opportunities for the thousands of families that have passed through the doors over the past 30 years, and as what is now know as Maxi-Jazz Dance Studio. Maxi-Jazz was the original studio in the Newcastle area to develop and create wonderful events for our families including movie nights, pizza parties, discos and more! We're proud to bring our unique CAMP experiences to our students and families. This trend has now caught on over the past few years and allowed us to truly deliver a magical experience for our students with many years of pathing the way for others. We have learned, grown, and developed so much over the past 33 years and will continue to share our passion for the performing arts, lead the way in ‘doing things differently’ for dance studios, and empower students to become more than they ever imagined possible.

Our Mover and Mighty Tappers are stand alone classes that are based off the LGTDA (Les Griffith Tap Dancing Association) Syllabus which we teach throughout our studio. These classes are based on the student's ability to ensure it meets their skills and technical abilities and progression as well as challenging students with its intricate rhythms and combinations.

With the inclusion of DanceStep at MJDS, our young dancers have a framework where they can contribute to the community in a positive way.

Past students of the DanceStep program have experienced increased levels of confidence and have learnt patience, empathy, communication skills and how to take initiative in different situations.

As affiliate members of the DanceStep program it is wonderful for us to be able to provide this opportunity for our dancers to flourish not only as young people, but to also watch them grow into competent and confident assistant teachers and student leaders.

What is AcroDance??

It is a genre of dance which seamlessly fuses elements of lyrical gymnastics tricks, balancing, tumbling, and jazz. Students learn Acrobatic tricks such as handstands, cartwheels, chest stands, elbow stands, walkovers, side and front aerials, and tumbling lines.

It is also an exciting opportunity to interact with other students in a fun and supportive enviornment and further progress and develop in their technique.

Here at MJDS, we feel that all students have the potential to be a great dancer and performer, and that our Enhancement Dance Team experience will only furthermore develop your love of dance and passion for performing. We are so excited to be able to offer these opportunities to our students and believe it strengthens our dance family and gives students more confidence, experience, increased strength and skills and most importantly, teamwork!

We also love the fact that the core of our studio is performing and sharing our love of dance, which allows our EP Dancers to not only compete in local competitions, but have the opportunity to also partake in local eisteddfods and local community performances. Our EP dancers will also participate in our annual Dance Explosion Concert at the end of the year and truly experience the heart of what Maxi-Jazz has been known and loved for over 35 years.

It's Celebration Week! Not only have we had a fabulous weekend at our 36th Annual Dance Explosion, but what a year we have had together! From a community performance to events, in class to on stage experiences at performances and competitions, we have had a jam packed 2023 season. So... LET'S CELEBRATE! LITTLE MONKEYS at MJDS 🐵 We love our Pre-Schoolers Circus class called LITTLE MONKEYS. It's a 45minutes class designed for children ages 2-6-year-olds and includes all the elements of the circus such as aerial silks, Lyra and trapeze (coming 2022), juggling, balancing, hooping and fun games. The class focuses on gross motor skills, fine motor skills, coordination, musicality, recognising and identifying objects. We cannot wait to meet your little monkey and welcome you to MJDS!
