Brainwaves
Tonight, the Conservatorium's BrainWaves will feature in ABC TV’s Compass program at 6:30...
BrainWaves is a community singing group, which brings together stroke survivors and their carers to enjoy the healing power of music in a supportive social environment.
The below song “Aphasia” performed by the group - tells of the communication impairment which affects around one-third of stroke survivors.
Aphasia was written for one of our choir members, who lives with the condition. While no two cases are identical, aphasia can compromise an individual’s ability to speak, understand others’ speech, read, write or use numbers, and often manifests as a frustrating combination of these difficulties.
Aphasia is a cognitive, not intellectual, impairment, and people with aphasia are often socially isolated, as are many stroke survivors.
BrainWaves meets each Saturday of the school term and is free to attend.
For more information, contact the Conservatorium on 4921 8900 or [email protected]
You can also connect at Conservatorium Brainwaves Choir or visit the Conservatorium website https://www.newcastle.edu.au
Thank you for listening to our song and our story. Please share the song with others and contact BrainWaves if you have a group who would like to learn the piece themselves.

The Castle Big Band has spent the last couple of months working on the music of the jazz greats (Ellington, Basie, Kenton and Hefti to name a few) and are now working on jazz from more contemporary ensembles and composers.
Here’s a clip of one of our recent rehearsals.
If you’d like to join the Castle Big Band from Term 2, send us a message or call our office on 49218900.
We’re particularly interested in Tenor sax and Bass Trombone players!
