MMK Music Promotions started on the Atherton Tablelands in 2004. I came into the live music scene to support my eldest son in his pursuit of becoming a working musician.
I started on Myspace to discover new music and bands and started promotimg the bands by marketing their music to others both in Australia and overseas . Events were organized to help my son and many of his friends be able to continue to play.
All the time learning the industry and how it worked.
I managed my sons metal band “ Echoed Silence “ for seven years in Far north Qld and sought out gigs for them as well as on line promotion.
In those early years we had the pleasure of working with bands such as The Angels , Screaming Jets, Wish for Wings, Japunga, 28 days , Butterfly Effect and many more .
I mentored and managed a young upcoming Punk Band called "SHUB " in Cairns and bought punk bands from Brisbane to the north to play events at The Cape York Hotel and Edge Hill Tavern in Cairns to enable them to continue to play.
In 2007 I was asked to run events in Cairns at Freakquency Club in Spence street. Gigs were run weekly on a Thursday night where starved Live music fans got to see 3 to 5 bands play to a packed room. Metal and Rock from around Australia. The largest event held at Freakquency was Metal Mayhem of 2008 where we had 3 bands a week travel from Brisbane to play with the local metal bands.
I worked closely with Metal Of Honor in Brisbane to book bands for Metal Mayhem that was held over 5 weeks between Townsville and Cairns. Fifteen Metal bands toured to the North to showcase their music for that event.
In Townsville I ran events at Bombay Rock, Toms Tavern in the suburbs and I worked closely with The Exchange Hotel in the inner city booking events.
In June of 2008 I organized “ ROCKFEST “ that saw 5 bands play Freakquency in Cairns Thursday night and then we travelled 4 hours and played Bombay Rock in Townsville on the Friday night .The event was in support of independent musicians and was run worldwide.
Bands that played “ ROCKFEST “ were Sleeplever Melbourne, Mark Cashin & The Lil Hussys Central Coast NSW, Sonorcast Sydney, Each Revolving Door Brisbane, Miacarla Gold Coast and Echoed Silence & Eyeless Youth Cairns.
Freakquency closed it doors and I continued to run events at The Grand Hotel In Cairns through till the end of 2008. “Rock out with your Croc out " showcased original local bands and touring bands. Bands that travelled north in 2008 to play an MMK event were Kill The Apprentice, Noxious, Nine Iron, The Pints and Black Market to name a few.
Forward to Brisbane 2012 where MMK was launched again and events were run out of The Prince of Wales Hotel Nundah on the Nth side of Brisbane for 2 years.
The MMK events moved to larger premises upstairs at the Indooroopilly Hotel in the western suburbs of Brisbane. It was known as “ VIBE “ and many bands both local and touring played there over the 14 months we were there.
Currumbin Creek Tavern also hosted MMK events and Coolangatta Hotel on the Gold Coast.
In conjunction with Metal Roos I organized the first Metal United Down Under “ MUDU” in Brisbane and we had a huge turn out of nearly 400 people and 13 bands to entertain them from 12 till 12. I followed this up the following year and ran the event at the New Globe in Fortitude Valley with 13 bands that covered all genre of metal.
In November of 2015 I ran my last show out of the Globe with my sons band Darkcell.
January 2016 “NOXIOUS” asked for my services and we put together a comeback show and I had the pleasure of working with The Woolly Mammoth team in Fortitude Valley.
January 2019 I came back to the Prince of Wales Hotel where it all started in Brisbane. Our first event back was a success and I will continue to bring live music to the POW every third and fifth Friday. Check the event page for details of upcoming shows.
I will also be running the odd show out of Wooly Mammoth in Fortitude Valley.
MMK Music Promotions has always been about getting it out there via social media as well as running events supporting local and touring bands via promotion and marketing as well as networking. I have a good knowledge of the local scene and venues and always looking for new bands and music to promote.
