Who is someone in your town or locality that deserves to have their story told?

People of Penguin is a social media project that celebrates locals, and it has just been turned into a book.

Today on ABC Radio Northern Tasmania Drive, Andre Leslie will chat to one of the makers of the project about how the idea came about.

⁉️ Exciting news ⁉️

As of tonight, our book will be in the process of being printed. Andrew has been working tirelessly to edit and finalise the finishing touches on our project.

For those who have requested to place an order, we kindly ask that you confirm your order by making a payment to assist with costs, as this is a non-profit initiative. Please message us for the bank details.

We have made an effort to keep costs as low as possible, and the final price of the book is set at $49.95.

* Additional costs may apply if posting is required*

Given the significance of dementia to my family at this time, Andrew and I have decided that all financial proceeds from the book will be donated to Dementia Australia.

This project has been significant for us and Andrew and I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement throughout this project. Your involvement has made a meaningful difference πŸ™

Henk, a true icon of Penguin,
made a significant life change in 1981 when he left his home in Holland, leaving behind his two brothers, two sisters, and parents. At just 19 years old, he embarked on a journey to Australia, specifically settling in Tasmania, in a town called Penguin. It is often said that once people come to Penguin, they either choose to stay or eventually find their way back.

Before his move, Henk had experience working in supermarkets in Holland. Through connections that linked his home country to Tasmania, he was offered a position at Woolworths, allowing him eight months to prepare for this new chapter in his life.

The phrase "it's a small world" often resonates in unexpected situations. While Henk was at the embassy arranging details for his move to Australia, he struck up a conversation with some fellow individuals. During their chat, he mentioned that he was relocating to Burnie, Tasmania. To his surprise, they shared that they were also moving to Tasmania, specifically to Penguin. This encounter led to lasting friendships for Henk.

In 1982, Henk lived in Burnie for ten months before relocating to Penguin with a friend. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed as a store manager at Woolworths in Smithton. Henk spent four years in Smithton, during which time he met Trudy. Initially, their relationship was friendly, but they became a couple in 1983.

Trudy, like Henk, also hails from Holland, having moved to Tasmania at the age of 12 in 1978. We are fortunate to have Trudy as a valued member of our community. It appears that Penguin and Ulverstone have become popular destinations for many Dutch immigrants, and further exploration may reveal the underlying reasons for this trend.

During Henk's time working in Smithton and Trudy's employment in Stanley, they often spent their weekends in Penguin visiting Trudy's family, which helped them establish their roots in the community. Eventually, Henk purchased a supermarket known as 'Value Plus,' which is now affectionately referred to as 'Henk's' in Penguin. This store has been a family-run business for the past 36 years and continues to thrive. Customers are warmly welcomed, and many feel a sense of belonging as they walk through the doors.

Henk can often be found either at his shop or at home, where family connections are deeply cherished. He and Trudy are proud parents of six children: Janneke, James, Jenna, Marieka, Mariella, and Marliese. Their family continues to grow, with five grandchildren and a sixth on the way.

Henk dedicates his time away from work to his church community. Upon his arrival in Penguin, he became involved with the Reformed Church, where around 80% of the congregation were Dutch. This provided a strong sense of family and allowed them to maintain their Dutch language and cultural ties. Currently, Henk is part of β€˜The Rock’ church in Penguin, which offers a inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. This church focuses on engaging young people and provides a variety of multifunctional activities, fostering a fresh perspective on community and faith.

Henk shared that for a time, he kept a bank account open in Holland as a precaution in case he ever needed to return. However, he eventually closed it after meeting his soulmate, Trudy. Reflecting on his journey, Henk feels that everything fell into place when he moved to Tasmania. Growing up in Holland, he didn't live near the sea, but his family often vacationed by the ocean. As a young boy, he expressed a desire to live by the sea one day, and now, he has achieved that dream.

Henk grew up in a small town in Holland, where he was well-known, so moving to Penguin was not a significant shock for him. This familiarity contributed to making Penguin feel more like home.

Trudy, Henk, their children, and grandchildren are valuable members of the Penguin community. Their warm smiles and welcoming demeanor create an inviting atmosphere in their shop. Regardless of where you encounter them, they are always ready for a conversation and make people feel appreciated. The presence of this positive family contributes to the strong sense of community in Penguin.

Thank you Henk,
