Last night's Christmas Charity Concert was a wonderful example of the Christmas Spirit in action. All performers donated their time and musical talents and our wonderful Bay Music Club supporters meant we had a full house, with tremendous support in buying raffle tickets and bringing donations of non-perishables, all in aid of the Perth Homeless Support Group.

The opening act for the final Bay Music Club event for 2024 should have been the Bettega-Cullen Duo, but lightning struck twice for them, with Bill Cullen sadly coming down with Covid again, almost 12 months to the day since the last Bay Music Club Fundraiser where the same thing happened. Hopefully there will be an opportunity for them to do a set sometime in 2025.
Many thanks to Jim and Steve from ‘Sweet Escape’ who stepped in at the last minute as a duo and performed some wonderful crowd favourites like Sounds of Silence, The Boxer, Delilah and Wagon Wheel.

Following on from Jim and Steve were the incomparable Wayne Perry and Ian Simpson. They have played at the Bay before, either as members of Bluegrass Parkway or performing their tribute show to John Denver. Their set had a bluegrass flavour with songs like Highwayman, Every Breath You Take (a bluegrass classic according to Wayne). If You Could Read My Mind featuring Ian’s fabulous dobro playing and Ray Steven’s arrangement of Misty. More goodies followed - Ain’t It Good To Be Back Home Again, I’m A Believer, Crying and a cracking version of Duelling Banjos with the boys trading lines.

Before the main act for the evening, Simon from Perth Homeless Support Group gave a short speech on the role of the charity and the increase in demand for their services and thanked everyone for supporting them.

Jim and Steve, formerly of Jimjam, have formed a new band ‘Sweet Escape’, a five piece band featuring Jim McGuire on vocals, guitar and mandolin, Steve Beckwith on vocals and guitar, Ailish Beckwith vocals and bass, Eleanor Fernandez on keyboards and vocals, and Richard Pooley on drums. They started their set with Merry Christmas (War Is Over) and continued with a swag of classic songs like Fernando, Simply The Best, Piano Man, Jolene, Apache, Shallow (from A Star Is Born), Folsom Prison, Proud Mary, H***y Tonk Woman and many more great tunes which had people up dancing in the aisles!

The event was a great success and all profits from the evening will be donated to the Perth Homeless Support Group who do such tremendous work.

A huge thank you to all the participants who donated their services and to all those who supported the club during the year - you are all legends!

Our next event will be in February and you will receive details early in the New Year.

The Scottish Spectacular was another sell-out at The Bay Music Club on Friday 22 November. A jam-packed evening of popular Scottish songs and music, accompanied by Scottish pipers and dancers ensured the audience had a night to remember. Headlining the evening was the wonderful Maggies Delight led by Jim McGuire. Highlights included the heartfelt My Ain Folk and Maggie through to the rollicking Wild Rover and the comical Ratlin Bog.

Solo singer/guitarist, Katie McMahon enchanted everyone with renditions of Robbie Burns’ My Love is Like a Red Red Rose, Will Ye No Come Back Again and the humorous Donald Where’s Ye Troosers.

The evening began with the rousing and awesome sounds of bagpipes with the entry of the Fremantle Sailing Club Scottish Pipers. Most memorable were Scotland the Brave, The Green Hills of Tyrol and the poignant The Battles O’er.

Interspersed with the singing, Scottish dancing girls from the Campbell School of Highland Dance Australia, Alba Academy of Highland Dancing and Infinity Dance Academy (some as young as nine years) delighted the audience with an array of lively dances including reels, a sword dance and the Highland Fling.

Our next event, on Friday 20 December, will be a fund-raising concert for the Homeless. Stay tuned for more information coming soon.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for a wonderful evening of live music at The Bay Music Club on Friday evening. The ever popular Jessie Gordon and Mark Turner were the headline act for the event. They have played for us twice before as a duo, so this time was a little different with superb double bassist Karl Florrison to the line-up. He brings another voice to the mix as well as the solid underpinning that a double bass supplies. The audience was treated to a range of original songs from their recent CD releases. Jessie and Mark write individually and together, and their songs are catchy, melodic and often humorous. Each of their sets featured one cover - All Of Me in the first and La Vie En Rose in the second. The sell-out crowd were enthusiastic in their appreciation. Support act Kazinko have a delightful style with a captivating blend of jazz, bossa nova, blues and contemporary tunes. It was a rather cold and wintery day on Friday, but the rainy weather didn't keep the fans away and September's Seekers Tribute was extremely well attended. A capacity crowd enjoyed the smooth harmonies of opening act Gypsy Lou, delivering some classics and some lesser-known songs in delightful two-part harmony.

After a short break, Avenue, a four-piece band, performed their Seekers tribute. Although the Seekers are no longer active, people obviously know and cherish their music. Avenue has a strong female lead vocalist in Joyce Mathers. Her band mates ably support her with their harmonies and occasionally take the lead themselves. The band have the same instrumentation as the original Seekers - double bass, six and twelve string guitar - with the addition of tin whistle and flute.

Over the course of their two sets Avenue sketched the career of the Seekers as they evolved from Australian folkies to English superstars. All the classic songs were featured culminating with Georgie Girl, I Am Australian and The Carnival Is Over. The audience loved them and demanded an encore.

A Tribute to The Seekers at The Bay Music Club

Friday was a big night at the Bay Music Club with the return of the 10 piece Dr Soul band, who last played here in July 2023. Opening the evening was fantastic Kerry Ryan, playing a solo acoustic set. Kerry previously performed at The Bay with his trio 2 years ago. He proved himself to be equally adept at acoustic blues as he is at electric. A well received batch of songs, some with the glass side for that rootsy Delta blues sound.

Dr Soul were in top form, two sets crammed full of classic soul and R’n’B from back when that term meant rhythm and blues. The dance floor was packed with dancers who loved every minute of the program. Dr Soul have two fabulous singers - Gabrielle and Avädhyn - who displayed all the vocal power of the artists they covered. What were the highlights? Well, everything they played was great so it’s hard to pick any standouts but Nutbush City Limits and Valerie certainly went down a treat with the dancers.
