Our April event at The Bay Music Club last night was a very jazzy affair with Libby Hammer and her Quartet, joined by guest vocalist Izzy Gath and support act Tim Parish. Tim was ably accompanied by Libby's band, which comprised Nick Abbey on double bass, Michael Perkins on drums, Alistair McEvoy on saxophone and pianist Chris Foster.

After a pleasing set from Tim featuring some classic tunes like 'Autumn In New York', Libby Hammer and the band played two sets peppered with well known tunes. Libby has an impressive vocal range and her interplay with the musicians was a treat to watch. Highlights included "No More Blues' with a Latin drum solo from Michael Perkins and 'Poinsiana' with some lovely sax from Alistair. The excitement level peaked in the second set with a great version of 'All Of Me', a guest vocal by Izzy singing Etta James' classic 'At Last' and Libby's take on Ray Charles' 'Hit The Road Jack'. All of the musicians are masters of their craft and played with taste and flair. They also put their own spin on some of the songs with unique arrangements that gave them a fresh sound.

Huge thanks to our performers last night - Café Jazz and support act Ben Bulla, who put on a wonderful night of live music!

It was Ben's second night at the Bay and he opened the evening with a stellar set. His excellent guitar playing and vocals were much appreciated by the audience.

Café Jazz opened with an instrumental that showcased their skills before being joined by vocalist Clare Fazackerley who led them through a number of well known standards which the audience loved and danced to, particularly in the second set. A special thanks to the band as they stepped into at short notice to replace published performers Dr Charlie who couldn't make it due to a medical emergency.

As the year draws to a close, on behalf of the Committee of The Bay Music Club, I would like to thank all the wonderful patrons who supported our events this year; all the entertainers who appeared at the Club and shared their music, our sound engineer and the staff of the Bayswater Bowling and Recreation Club. Thank you also to our committee members and volunteers, without whom we would not be able to put these shows on.

The Club's Committee includes three musicians, two of whom donated their services as performers on Friday night's fund-raising event. Unfortunately, our President, Bill Cullen, caught COVID on Monday and was unable to perform as part of the Bettega-Cullen Duo. Bev Abela kindly stepped in as the support act and delivered a stellar set of originals supported by Susanne Brown on backing vocals, Duncan Farrow on drums and Ed Bettega on lead guitar.

Jimjam, the main act of the evening, delivered two sets, showcasing their breadth of talents as multi instrumentalists who can play convincingly in a number of styles from folk to jazz to comedy and high energy rock and roll. Featuring three strong vocalists in Jim McGuire, Susanne Brown and Steve Beckwith, who all stepped to the fore to sing lead. With Duncan Farrow on drums in the second set and guest appearances by Jenny Hoffman on Flute and Whistle and David Hoffman on Accordion Jimjam entertained the very enthusiastic audience who demanded an encore. It was a wonderful way to round off our year at The Bay Music Club.

The evening raised funds for the Perth Homeless Support Group and The Bay Music Club was pleased to be able to donate $1626.68 to them. Thank you to everyone present for your generosity.

We are taking a break in January and will be back to entertain you on the 4th Friday of each month from February, with a fantastic lineup of events. Friday at "The Bay' was a wonderful night of music. Featured artists Wayne Perry and Ian Simpson delivered an evening of John Denver. Anyone who has heard Bluegrass Parkway will recognise Wayne from that line-up. What becomes apparent when you hear him singing is that he has a wonderful voice which is well suited to singing the music of John Denver. He is also adept at finger picking six and twelve string guitars. He is accompanied by multi instrumentalist Ian Simpson, who switched between banjo, resonator guitar and six string acoustic. All the Denver hits were played as well as some choice deep cuts from the many albums Denver produced. Evening openers The Catherine Wheels are a trio featuring two Cathies. They write their own material and have a knack for catchy melodies and beautiful harmonies. Robert Thorpe on lead guitar added some nice instrumental fills and backing vocals. A great evening of music, food and drink with three lucky raffle winners having the choice of a bottle of whisky, a bottle of v***e clicquot and a double pass to an upcoming Bay event.

Jessie Gordon and Mark Turner made a welcome return to the Bay Music Club on Friday night. It’s been nearly a year since their last appearance at The Bay and they impressed from the get go to the last well deserved encore, delivering two sets of wonderful music. If you haven’t seen them, you are missing out as they are world class professionals. They mixed jazz, soul and folky elements in both their original songs and their distinctive arrangements of standards and covers. Jessie also displayed her sense of humour in her lyrical additions to songs such as 'Jolene’ and ‘All Of Me’ which poke fun at the paternalistic lyrics of the songwriters. Support artist Catherine Traicos is a newcomer to the Bay. She has a lovely voice and performs all her own material. Both artists donated a recording to our raffle prizes and expressed their appreciation to the Committee for providing a venue which puts the music first and has a great atmosphere and sound.

Our next event will be on 27 October when Wayne Perry and Ian Simpson present An Evening of John Denver, supported by The Catherine wheels. Happy Launch Day! ‘The Nashville Record’ is out today across all music streaming platforms and also available on my Bandcamp in digital and vinyl formats. This record was forged in the depths of lockdown, recorded across two continents, and completed after the borders opened. As they did in the pandemic for many of us, social apps and remote communication are embedded in its fabric providing inspiration for the songs and also a means to record them. I am eternally grateful for the good luck and serendipity that shone upon us in the making of this piece.

A huge thank you to our performers on Friday Night - Etta D'Elia - Vocalist and Hardey McMurrick Kind for a fantastic night of live music. Etta's talent, humour and endearing personality had the audience joining in enthusiastically on well known choruses as she took us on a musical trip around the world. Backed by her wonderful musicians it was a fabulous jazzy night at The Bay.
Hardey McMurrick Kind played a set of originals with a funky style showcasing his excellent vocal range and had some lovely instrumental passages as well. The trio was reduced to a duo for the evening due to illness, but they did an excellent job of entertaining our audience. The wooden bodied banjo ukulele over the double bass gave them a unique and memorable sound.
