🌊⛵ Peli Power Up - Pelicans Race Recap - October 3rd, 2024 🛶

What an incredible day on the Swan River last week! EFYC hosted the annual “Peli Power Up” training regatta. Crews attended from around the state including from GBYC, EBYC, and GYC as well local Perth clubs. This culminated on Thursday afternoon with some impressive sailing skills in challenging, gusty conditions.

From tactical starts to thrilling finishes, these young skippers demonstrated skill, determination, and a true love for sailing. It was a fantastic day for everyone involved, and we couldn't be prouder of the effort and sportsmanship on display. 🏅✨

What a great afternoon of sailing!
The first sailing race of the 2024-25 season took place in The Reach on Sunday. With light winds gusting to 12-15 knots and a lull in the first of 2 Short Course races the 7 Keelboats set out on a beautiful clear afternoon.

Sailors were met with tricky conditions and squalls of up to 25 knots making things interesting at times for the Centreboard Section's Winter Series Race 3 on 21st July.

There were 16 boats from three classes out on the Swan River navigating two short-course races.

Last Sunday was an interesting afternoon of sailing enjoyed by 8 adventurous Keelboat skippers. Winds varied from less than 5 knots at the start and at the end. There were a few other calm periods interspersed with some strong winds with gusts up to 30 knots. Course 4 was shortened at Parker for Divisions 2 and 3 with all yachts completing the race within 15 minutes of each other.

The heavier boats relished the strong windy sections of the race with Jolly Roger getting off to a good start -soon to be caught up by the other yachts in the fickle winds. Jolly Roger skippered by Brian Rogers with Fran fulfilling all the other crew roles onboard came in First and Fastest in Division 2 with Jack finding some flat spots in the changing conditions and taking Second place. The conditions during the strong wind periods suited Double Vision skippered by Tony Watkins and he was First over the line with Flying Fox skippered (and crewed) by Kris Young following. Four boats contested Division 4 with Ninja (skippered by Gavin McAllister) First, followed by Green Room (skippered by Brett Roper with Andrew Muhling as crew) in Second, with Out of the Blue (skippered by Mark Osborne) taking third spot. Greg Simpson with an all female crew did some creative spinnaker work and came in later after some navigation issues.

Well done to all those skippers and crew who ventured out. Their skills in handling the very varied wind conditions was on display and good to see. Let's hope some more skippers will join them in their next outing.
