The shells in the Post Office Apartment are a tribute to Mr and Mrs Laker, who ran the post office here at the Customs House in the late 1800’s.

According to the South Australian Register on 1st July 1899:
“Probably one of the finest (shell) collections in the colony is that gathered by Mr Laker, our local Postmaster, who with his wife takes the greatest interest in conchology.”
