"Morning... Thank you again so much for yesterday and everything prior. We were so lucky to have you with us. All of our crew are still raving about you, the best celebrant on earth. Agreed! Love Steven & Fergus."

Waking up to messages like this 🥲

Every moment I spent with Steven and Fergus was an absolute pleasure for me. Every email, every coffee, every text, every time I sat at my laptop typing away with them as the subject, and then standing with them during their ceremony... feeling the plethora of emotions that are present when a twenty year love story culminated in the milestone of this legal and symbolic commitment. Pure bliss.

And they wore velvet jackets. Perfection.

"Just wanted to say a huge thanks once again, couldn't imagine having anyone else" - Emma

Yesterday Emma and Nick got hitched in their loungeroom with their fam bam, their dog, and their two best mates. They'll never forget their wedding anniversary...it only comes around every four years.

And, can please we take a moment to celebrate Emma in her dress (her words: "the girliest dress I've ever worn"). Emma found it at a local op shop for FIVE BUCKS but she looks A MILLION DOLLARS. I love the vibe of tatts against a white dress. It's so rock n' roll.

Robbie and Anne first contacted me four years ago, but COVID well and truly got in their way! These two have waited patiently and made significant effort to be together, and the life and family they have created was once only a dream. It was so wonderful that they got their special day yesterday, finally.

Also, a massive shout out to their family friends who hosted the wedding in their garden. So many of the ceremonies I get to officiate are at private homes, mostly at the homes of the couples or the homes of someone close to them. So much goes into hosting a wedding. To all of the people subtly working away to make things just right, I just want to say: I see you and I appreciate you.

Bernie and Greg tied the knot today (literally, with a handfasting included in their ceremony) beside the Fawthrop Canal in Portland.

When Bernie and Greg met they fell for one another quickly, hook, line and sinker. I'd say they each caught a good one! 🎣

Ash and Sam got married on their farm last May. They set up some tree stumps to stand between, atop a hill, looking out at their stunning view. It was misty and drizzly and muddy, and just divine.

And it was just them, their boys, their besties as witnesses, and me! Oh, and the cows. The ceremony on the hill was "legal only" so it took about a minute. Then we took off to the shed to sign the certificates on the hay bales. That took another few minutes.

You know, more and more people are choosing to get married this way. It's so chilled and so lovely.

There are some pretty cool dates coming up in February. There's Valentine's Day AND it's a leap year. It's not too late to get married on the 14th or the 29th. Get in touch and we will make it happen!

After the ceremony Ash emailed me and said "Thank you so much for today. You have made this process so easy and effortless." If that sounds good to you, I'm here for it!

I was totally in my element today, and trying desperately not to ugly-cry, as I got to marry my soul sister Kellie to her man Jamie (now my soul brother-in-law!).

Held in the immaculate gardens of some lifetime family friends, Kellie and Jamie had immediate family and a couple of besties there today. They pulled it all together in about five or six weeks.

Choosing a simple ceremony, Kellie and Jamie got the feels without the length; perfect for their young daughters Ruby and Milly who sat content at their feet under the archway, and then each kissed the rings as a blessing. Mind you, Milly did ask for the ring back once Daddy was finished with it!

Here's to all that has been, and all that is yet to come!

This backyard wedding was so secret that when I arrived and knocked on the door Kirsten, who was getting ready inside, was worried it was the neighbours. "It's just me, the celebrant!" I called out. Phew!

Kirsten and Jake got married in November after thirteen years together. They announced it to everyone on New Year's Eve.

I love a secret wedding. Seeing the photos (the divine captured this wedding) and all of the congratulatory messages weeks or months down the track is like getting to experience it all twice.

These two chose a legal only ceremony. They had only their sons, besties and dogs present (plus me and Mel, how lucky are we?!). Then they ventured to the Enchanted Forest for photos and they are magic.

Happy New Year Kirsten and Jake! Thanks for choosing me to be a small part of your day.

I begin 2024 by expressing my deep gratitude to the traditional custodians of the lands and waterways on which I live and work: the Gunditjmara people.

Their enduring culture and lore, their kinship with and connection to Country and their ability to heal despite ongoing injustice is an incredible expression of wisdom, strength and spirit. I pay my respects to elders, past, present and emerging.

As a white person who is still digging into my own largely unknown ancestral lineage, I acknowledge my privilege and I acknowledge that this land was never ceded. I affirm my intention to be part of a community of truth tellers in the spirit of understanding and friendship.

As a civil celebrant, I commit to Acknowledging Country as a standard part of the ceremonies I have the honour of officiating. I believe the more significant an occasion is, the more important it is to remember the Country and Traditional Custodians. It doesn't take a lot to do this, but it means a lot. I understand that not everyone agrees with me, which is one reason I am taking steps to make my position clear.

The inclusion of Acknowledgement of Country is one conversation I encourage people to be having with celebrants at point of enquiry. I have now made it clear in the information I share with people when they first ask about my services, that Acknowledgement is standard across all ceremony options I offer. I admit that before recently, I had assumed people knew this was my practice but I can see how that may have been missed as I did not communicate it often enough in multiple places. That's on me and I have learnt from my shortfall. Interestingly, the inclusion of an Acknowledgement was never questioned, in over 120 ceremonies, until after the recent referendum.

So with great respect, and with the aim of ensuring my clients AND myself are acting in accordance with our own integrity, I humbly advise that people who do not feel comfortable having an Acknowledgement of Country as part of their ceremony would be best to enquire with an alternative celebrant. Please know that I say this with love, because I sincerely want couples to be happy on their special day, but I don't want to compromise my personal values to enable this.

Another point to note is that I cannot perform a "Welcome to Country"; only a member of the local First Nations community (or an Indigenous person who has been granted permission by them) can do so. But anyone can Acknowledge Country.

LOL! This captures the few moments I spent ribbing Lauren's Dad.

When Hayden showed up for a beer and brought up the topic of marriage, Daddy-O didn't realise he was about to ask his blessing to propose. He told Hayden that marriage is a waste of time and money! That kinda killed the moment 😆 Poor fella hasn't lived it down.

Luckily Hayden was undeterred.

These two were legally married at their home in a simple ceremony with immediate family only, especially so that some special senior family members could be present. Soon after they travelled to Bali for an epic symbolic ceremony in paradise.

I want to thank every couple that has entrusted me with their marriage ceremonies this year: the secret, the small, the simple, the substantial and the supersized! It is never lost on me how much your occasion means to you, and what an honour it therefore is for me to be part of it.

Happy New Year!

Thank you Melissa Imbi Photography for the joyful photo!

After twelve years together Briilee and Sean decided to get hitched!

They went full DIY, holding their ceremony and reception at the South Portland Recreational Hall. They chose the simple ceremony package from me and wrote their own vows (which they totally nailed by the way!).

As their ceremony song by Natalie Cole says, "this will be an everlasting love."

Ah, so much to love about Mel and Bart!

Today they got married at The Barn in Mount Gambier. Their young son Luke was a bit of a star of the ceremony. He "blessed" the rings by blowing bubbles at them with a bubble gun, and let's be honest he was busy for most of the ceremony blessing everyone and everything! Meanwhile, his baby sister Marley was totally content sitting on the grass near her Nan. Marley "blessed" the rings too with a hold and a wriggle of the boxes.

Weddings with kids aren't always predictable, but they're always adorable. The little ones often want to be close, and that makes for awesome photos in my opinion!

BUT, it does help to have a crew of people who can step in with the kiddos when needed. Today Mel and Bart had a specific vision for their kiss photo, and that did not involve Luke being front and centre while they pashed. That dude was standing his ground, that's for sure! I managed to suggest he grab his bubble gun ready for the next bit and it worked, phew! While he was fetching it Bart said "quick!" and I announced "Mr and Mrs Alexander!" And I reckon the fabulous got the shot. Yay team!

Here's to many epic adventures as a family. Big love to you all.

Thursday Narrawong Nuptials...

Short but sweet and very, very windy! Big congratulations to Amanda and Robert who travelled from the big smoke to have an intimate beach wedding at the beginning of a few days holidaying in our corner of the state.

Sometimes the best moments in a ceremony cannot be planned...

Last weekend, right at the beginning of the Jess' and Aaron's ceremony their bubba Ollie made a *sound.* A pop off. A pretty loud one! We all erupted in laughter.

Ollie was a real star of the occasion, clapping along with everyone else and waving the ring box with enthusiasm. That boy has skills!

Here's wishing Ollie's Mum and Dad a lifetime of happiness!

A wedding at stunning Annesley House! In my ten years as a celebrant I've always wanted to officiate a marriage ceremony here, and today Jess and Aaron made that dream come true for me. Isn't it divine?

What a special Sunday at Seaview Indian Traditional Restaurant! Baljinder and Lovepreet are having an epic wedding in India next year, but today they did the legal thing with yours truly. It was such a pleasure to spend time with this divine couple, and I can't wait to see the photos from their traditional Sikh celebrations. I am so honoured to be even a small part of that!

Tuesday wedding? Stoked! Happy Halloween *ahem* I mean happy wedding day to Jess and Tayte!

Groom in red, with his crew in black with a splash of red. Bride in classic white with her ladies in black with a splash of red. And the most divine faux fur shawls. What a vibe. The Portland Botanical Gardens have never been so lit on a weekday arvo!

Jess and Tayte, thanks for choosing me! Here's to many happy times ahead for you and your kiddos!

One year ago today there was an occasion of magick and mysticism in the forest, with the handfasting of Hayley and Warren.

At the very moment I called in the spirits of Ether, a tree in the nearby woods crashed down and the reverberations were felt within and without all of us. There were moments of the natural world co-creating and responding to what we were conjuring throughout the whole occasion.

I pinch myself that Haze and Waz found me, and bestowed this high honour upon me. Thank you for inviting me into your life!

Happy Anniversary!

It's alllllllllmost November!

I've been in my "office" (come storage space for my son's toys) all day doing admin and paperwork. This month I am officiating six weddings.

Three of the ceremonies in November are the full package, the whole shebang, what I call "The Dream" at three of most chic venues this part of the world has to offer. And three are literally legals only affairs, one at a beach, one in the bush and one in a restaurant.

When I first started as a celebrant I wouldn't have done six weddings in a year... mind you, it was more of a hobby or side gig then. I am so grateful to all the couples who put their trust in me. What a job I have!

"Dear Shae, Thank you so much for being part of our big day! Your lovely, calm way helped us through and we will appreciate you forever. Thanks so much again, Todd and Nerida."

I recently got to stand next to these two as they spoke the most heartfelt vows to one another in their backyard wedding. Being in the presence of such sweet connection will never get old for me. I love it and I am so grateful.

Mr and Mrs Mutch!

After thirteen years together Steph and James thought it was time to tie the knot. They chose a surprise wedding at their home in Merino; everyone was told it was a 30th birthday party... However we reckon about half of their family and friends had guessed before they arrived, hehe!

Steph and James chose a simple ceremony and they wrote their own vows, which were full of love, laughter and happy tears.

Here's to many more happy times together!
