🟩 The Story of Mate:
WHY IS MATE CALLED THAT?
When Europeans arrived on these lands, they noticed that the natives practiced the ritual of drinking an infusion that the Guaranas called "caigua". This expression is derived from the Guaranese words "káa" (yerba), "y" (water) and "gua" (procedence), which can be translated to "yerba water".
The expression "mate", comes from the Quechuan vocabulary "mati", meaning pumpkin, which is where mate was prepared. The same was taken through a straw called "takuari", at the end of which was placed a drooped seed that used to filter.
By extension, the Europeans copied in this way the infusion elaborated from the yerba (ilex paraguayensis). These had the belief that it was a "w**d of the devil" for not knowing its practice. They also claimed that it was a drink of haraganes, because the natives devoted several hours a day to this ritual.
Yerba mate owes its bitter taste to the tannins of its leaves, which is why there are people who like to sweeten it a little, and the foam generated by the barley is the cause of glucosides.
Mate is more than just a drink. It's a tradition that beats creole isolationist customs and pairs social classes... and through the times, it is the mate who made the wheel of friends, and not the wheel who brought the mate. And not only that, it is also a symbol for everyone who moves away from his native country (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil) and finds in it a remembrance and a link to his land.

Today is Dia de Noquis, or Gnocchi Day! In Uruguayan tradition, it is said that on the 29th of each month.. the last day of the month when the cupboard is empty and money is running low, there is always a potato in the cupboard to create a meal, leaving coins under the plate for good fortune.

We go to some pretty wild and wonderful events with our food truck, but Saturday was different all together. Set up next to our mates Fugazi pizza at Kryal Castle for Questival, we saw costumes and characters of all kinds questing around the castle for what looked like an amazing event.
