hnny visited regularly, for some two decades – and not to play music! Johnny first visited Stanthorpe in the early 1980s, and visited regularly thereafter for two decades, the latter decade with wife June Carter, herself a renowned singer with the famous Carter Family. He came to visit an old friend from America, who had moved to Australia for family reasons. Johnny took an instant liking to our little town and its surrounding districts of apple and stone fruit orchards, vineyards, and a wide and empty country side where he enjoyed riding, hunting and overall…the anonymity. So Stanthorpe can legitimately lay claim to be the only place in the world, outside America, which can call itself ‘Johnny Cash Country’. And the Johnny Cash Country Music Festival celebrates this unique piece of music history.
