Happy Monday and what way to start the week with the happiest style of Brazilian dance - Axé !

Did you know...
Axé (Ash-eh – ‘e’ as in bed) is a popular music genre originating in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil approximately in 1986, fusing different Afro-Caribbean genres, such as Marcha, Reggae, and Calypso. It also includes influences of Afro-Brazilian music such as Frevo, Forró and Carixada. The most important creator of this music style was Alfredo Moura, conducting Carlinhos Brown, Luiz Caldas, Sarajane and others. The word “axé” comes from a Yoruba religious greeting used in the Candomblé and Umbanda religions that means “soul”, “light”, “spirit” or “good vibration”.

The style Axé is a solo dance that started in 1992 during the Brazilian Carnaval season in Bahia when the Axé rhythm replaced the Lambada. The dance is completely choreographed and the movements tend to mimic the lyrics. It’s a very energetic kind of dance that mixes elements of Samba no pé and aerobics and because of the lyrics, which are made for entertainment, the dance generally has some sort of ludic element.

Several Axé music groups such as “É o Tchan” have as part of their marketing strategy to always release a choreography together with every one of their songs; therefore, Axé is an ever-changing kind of dance with no commitment to maintaining any formal set of steps or routines (there’s actually no such a thing as a basic step in Axé).

At our recent stage show "A Night in Brazil" our students worked hard to learn not just 1 but 3 different Axé choreographies to immerse the audience in.

For some the process of getting on stage and the exhilarating challenge that is showing yourself in front of people can be daunting but have the biggest rewards. For others, its a comfort zone where they have the best fun and choose to be who ever they want. Let’s Dance Latin Dance Academy is the Sunshine Coast’s premier dance institution teaching a variety of specialised latin dance for kids, teens, adults and seniors. Offering upward of 30 classes per week out of their Maroochydore studio, and now 4 classes each week in Noosa, they teach beginners through to advanced levels.

Let’s Dance Latin Dance Academy employs highly qualified and experienced teachers from Australia, Spain, Brazil and Uruguay providing unmatched authenticity to their classes. At Let’s Dance Latin we incorporate appreciation of culture, history and musical rhythms into our curriculum to provide an inclusive learning experience to our students.

Our services include: Weekly Classes, Private Lessons, Wedding & Hen’s Night Packages, Entertainment Packages, Performance Teams as well as Competition preparation for individuals and groups - amateur to pro!
