It's been a week and it's only Tuesday!
Over the weekend, I was feeling so incredibly proud of my work and being a part of an amazing team that I admire and love working with.
I'm also feeling disheartened and disrespected by someone who sat at a table that I helped to create drinking champagne and eating cake. They disrespected not only me, but someone I invited to capture my work by asking them (in front of the entire table) how experienced they were. Ummm rude much, belittling and patronising.
Later, when enquiring if I would be interested in doing a shoot they were organising, they referred to me as 'that chick who did the flowers’ because you know, flowers are the hardest part to get (their words). That’s because they’re expensive and it’s a huge investment of MY money and MY time to provide you with content. They clearly loved my work enough to want me to contribute to their shoot, but didn’t value me enough to take the time to find out my name.
This industry is so beautiful but man it can be brutal, political, unsupportive and competitive.
I'd like to say it is an isolated incident, but unfortunately it is not. There are way too many egos in this industry who have a sense of entitlement.
I'm no wallflower, I don't crumble easily and yet here I am, affected by the actions of careless and uncaring people. These experiences have made me realise I don't want to be a part of this if this is what it is. It has convinced me that, for now, I need to drop tools and push pause on my flower business. I'm not sure for how long, or if it will be permanent, I'll just wait and see. I'll still continue to create, to play and to provide flower inspiration, I just won't be offering flowers under the Bloom & Bush brand for now.
To all my beautiful couples who have already booked me, don't worry, I'm here as always for you and your day will be incredible. I promise! And to those in the industry who do bother to find out my name and who are supportive, collaborative, generous hearted, thank you! I appreciate you, I see you.
We all have bad moments and do and say things in the moment, but please, be nice, be mindful of your words and be respectful.
