Doing things we don’t want to do 🤮
As a coach you encounter this in many forms, often on a daily basis.
The athlete that protests against doing an exercise or type of training
The athlete that wont engage in serious evidence based training and falls in with the coach that allows them to do the “fun” “replicate their sports movements in a gym” type training.
The talented athlete that simply won’t do the hard yards and thinks yoga is all they need
Parents that allow their junior athletes to decide what they want and don’t want to do.
There is a place for everything, but please understand that as an athlete or a parent of an athlete, moving away from the difficult stuff isn’t helping and there is now scientific evidence out there that backs this up!
Lean into the struggle, seek out the difficult, look where you don’t want to look! On a neurological level you will change, evolve and become better! In a way that may not only help you perform better in the future but also live longer.

The first thing that normally gets dropped when schedules get tight is the junior athletes S & C program. Instead they engage in endless hours of conditioning work. This is simply done due to the influence of others that are just not educated well enough in long term athletic development. More is not always better!! A well rounded S & C program will teach a young body spatial awareness, proprioception, physical literacy, provide a resilient base to mitigate injury as well as enhancing cognitive and emotional abilities …. This must be a priority!
Another question I tend to be asked is 10 too young to start a S & C program. The answer is definitely not!! A well structured junior development program sets up young athletes for life, apart from everything mentioned above, it removes performance ceilings and really allows them to reach their full potential later in life.
I could provide countless real life examples of junior athletes that started their S & C program with me at the age of 9 or 10, fast forward a decade they are now at the top of their sports, winning national titles and heading to the Olympics …. They are also well rounded individuals with a love for the journey they are on!

Being a Strength & Conditioning Coach that also have a Psychology degree I am continually trying to build awareness in my athletes regarding their mental preparation for events.
It’s a very layered and individualised approach, however one of the many tools that an athlete must have is the ability to utilise powerful, specific and meaningful mantras (or self talk)
Mantras can refine sentences into bite sized statements to assist athletes achieve their optimal performance state.
They may be motivational, inspiring, calming, skill specific, environmental specific, directional for focus and attention … the list goes on. One think they must be is personal and filled with meaning for that individual.
Athletes are vicariously learners, so just being told is sometimes not enough, I love this clip as it SHOWS athletes engaging in the use of mantras!!

Sports Specific training …. Does it exist? And if so what is it? 🧐
These questions have more layers than an onion 🧅
Before we move on to even try and tackle topics such as skill acquisition and the transfer of physical qualities to sports performance, allow me to make one statement.
You don’t need to replicate a sporting movement to make an individual exercise and/or a physical preparation program sports specific 😳
Crazy talk huh 🤔
Simply by manipulating percentages of elements, horizontal pull to vertical pull, planes of movements, squat to hinge, rotate to brace, bilateral to unilateral, type of muscle contraction and changing the focus of injury mitigation strategies, rotor cuff, hamstring, neck, ankle …. Literally the list goes on and on …can produce a kick arse sports specific program.
Time and place for everything but if you haven’t got this stuff right first there is no point in bringing your golf club or surfboard into a gym setting 😂

Strength without range is simply limiting!
Range without strength is simply dangerous!
Whilst humans are bipedal one of our main training focuses with every athlete that walks through our doors is developing a stable strong ankle joint that has good range 👣
We do this through a mix of strength based training exercises, calf and tibialis weighted raises, body weight pogos, stiletto’s mixed with passive and active range stretching 🙆 💪
Strong and mobile ankles play a very important role in effective, efficient movement patterns, load absorption, force production and mitigating injury.

I know we all seek instant gratification. Maybe we always have but in todays environment there are far more charlatans and those with no integrity willing to pray on this emotion 😢
So many times I hear people say my online guru trainer or my trainer at my local gym said if I do this one exercise it will fix my pop up in surfing.
Total bullsh*t 💩 💩💩💩
Look doing something will always be better than doing nothing, however, you have to realise that
There are so many factors that go into you being able to perform a well executed pop up. Range of mobility, stability and strength through the neck, shoulder, chest, t-spine, hips, lower limbs and ankles will all have a massive impact on your performance.
Also what is hindering you, may not be hindering the next person so everything is so so individual.
Therefore the only way to really know what is blocking you and how to get real results is to see a well accredited and experienced strength and conditioning coach (not a personal trainer) that runs a battery of tests on you. In a perfect world you would also recruit a great physio that can help guide that S&C coach about exactly what isn’t working for you.
So please stop the 💩 stop looking for a short cut!!
Stop being taken advantage of and do your due diligence, follow the steps above, do the work and I guarantee you will start to see real results!
Ps don’t forget getting to your feet is a skill element of surfing so if you’re really struggling go see an accredited surf coach and learn that skill.

It has been a very humbling experience to take a step back and comprehend the immense talent that has and still does call the OPC home 🙌
There are World Champions, World Record breakers, Olympians, Australian Champions and those that have simply reached the pinnacle of their sport 💪
This list isn’t even complete, there are internationally successful athletes such as triathlete @kizzajane and surfer @harrybryant and a myriad of athletes that have medalled, made Australian teams or won australia titles at the junior level such as @lucy_dring @mikaylastuart_ @joe_mcmenamin @noahstocca @jaleesavincent @elliamaismith and @joshfabiani … I need a bigger wall 😳
It takes a village to provide the right environment for champions to flourish. These athletes had great coaches before me, and in all honesty their skill coaches provided the true magic 🪄
I can say whole heartily and honestly that I am so proud and grateful to have played a small role in the development of all these athletes, many of which I have coached for nearly a decade. They didn’t have these titles when they first walked through the OPC doors, but they do now 🙌
This post is for me to express my gratitude to all the amazing athletes that have and do put their faith in me to do everything I can, to always bring my A-game to the table to assist them in achieving their goals in this life, to help them enjoy the journey and hopefully somewhere along they way become better humans!
