Doing things we don’t want to do 🤮
As a coach you encounter this in many forms, often on a daily basis.
The athlete that protests against doing an exercise or type of training
The athlete that wont engage in serious evidence based training and falls in with the coach that allows them to do the “fun” “replicate their sports movements in a gym” type training.
The talented athlete that simply won’t do the hard yards and thinks yoga is all they need
Parents that allow their junior athletes to decide what they want and don’t want to do.
There is a place for everything, but please understand that as an athlete or a parent of an athlete, moving away from the difficult stuff isn’t helping and there is now scientific evidence out there that backs this up!
Lean into the struggle, seek out the difficult, look where you don’t want to look! On a neurological level you will change, evolve and become better! In a way that may not only help you perform better in the future but also live longer.

The first thing that normally gets dropped when schedules get tight is the junior athletes S & C program. Instead they engage in endless hours of conditioning work. This is simply done due to the influence of others that are just not educated well enough in long term athletic development. More is not always better!! A well rounded S & C program will teach a young body spatial awareness, proprioception, physical literacy, provide a resilient base to mitigate injury as well as enhancing cognitive and emotional abilities …. This must be a priority!
Another question I tend to be asked is 10 too young to start a S & C program. The answer is definitely not!! A well structured junior development program sets up young athletes for life, apart from everything mentioned above, it removes performance ceilings and really allows them to reach their full potential later in life.
I could provide countless real life examples of junior athletes that started their S & C program with me at the age of 9 or 10, fast forward a decade they are now at the top of their sports, winning national titles and heading to the Olympics …. They are also well rounded individuals with a love for the journey they are on!

Being a Strength & Conditioning Coach that also have a Psychology degree I am continually trying to build awareness in my athletes regarding their mental preparation for events.
It’s a very layered and individualised approach, however one of the many tools that an athlete must have is the ability to utilise powerful, specific and meaningful mantras (or self talk)
Mantras can refine sentences into bite sized statements to assist athletes achieve their optimal performance state.
They may be motivational, inspiring, calming, skill specific, environmental specific, directional for focus and attention … the list goes on. One think they must be is personal and filled with meaning for that individual.
Athletes are vicariously learners, so just being told is sometimes not enough, I love this clip as it SHOWS athletes engaging in the use of mantras!!
