Eid Mubarak to our Afghan Tucker family 🎊...

For those unfamiliar, Eid al-Adha is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims to honour the faithfulness of the prophet Ibrahim to Allah in his willingness to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail. It occurs at the end of the Hajj Pilgrimage, an annual journey made by those of able means to the holy city of Mecca.

Qurbani (a sacrifice) of an animal, often a sheep or goat, is made to honour and remember Ibrahim's devotion and is divided between family, friends and others in need.

The occasion is celebrated with family, friends, new clothes, gifts and food 🥘🕌

We get asked a lot:- what do our kebabs look like? The word kebab is actually thought to have originated from the Middle East and in it’s Arabic form, simply meant ‘roasted meat’.

Today, kebab takes many forms in many cultures. Even in Afghanistan, there are several types of kebab. The signature ‘Afghan Tucker’ kebab is called ‘Kebabeh Sikhi’ in Afghanistan or ‘Sikh Kebab’ in English. It is pieces of meat that are skewered (on much more epic rods than we Aussie’s can lay claim to!) and grilled over hot coals. Traditionally, this style of kebab is served at times of celebration. It is also served in restaurants and as street food.

At Afghan Tucker, we marinate, skewer and cook fresh lamb over an open grill and serve it on top of traditional Afghan bread (‘naan’) with salad and Afghan chutney. You can roll it if you like but you might get some strange looks from native Afghani’s who prefer to eat each piece wrapped in a smaller piece of bread and any accompaniments. Nooshejan! (that’s buon appetite in Afghani).

Afghanistan is beautiful, it is home to some of the most diverse and exquisite landscapes on this planet. Unfortunately, in Australia, the only Afghanistan we are regularly exposed to is a place of desolation and destruction.

Our mission at Afghan Tucker goes beyond just serving you fantastic food. What we really want is to share with you all is the real Afghanistan, her people and her culture. We hope and pray that through education, you and I might all move closer to a place where our capacity to love and respect one another outclasses the harshness we are sometimes surrounded by.
