Adaptive. Strong. Capable. Creative.
These are just some of the words we use to describe the many talented female identifying musicians that walk our halls.

The world of art music has been a tough one for female conductors and musicians alike, but we know change is in the air.

We know we’re a day late, but we still wanted to acknowledge the hard work our staff, students and grads all put into honing their craft, making the future of our industry brighter for the years to come. Happy International Women’s Day.

We celebrate you, always.

Congratulations to Chrissia Monica for being awarded the AIM Classical Postgraduate Research Prize! This award acknowledges the Masters Research Project from a Classical singer or instrumentalist which received the highest mark in the Semester. 👏🏼💐🎶

Research Title:
Interpretations of Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto as Performed by ‘Old School’ and ‘New School’ Violinists

Abstract:
The Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Op. 35 in D Major was composed in 1878 and it is one of the most significant concertos ever written for the violin. In the past, this concerto was claimed as too difficult, and two dedicatees of the concerto Iosef Kotek and Leopold Auer refused to play it. Twelve years after the concerto was composed, Leopold Auer edited the concerto to make it easier and less repetitive. There are well known recordings from the old school virtuoso violinists, such as Jascha Heifetz who performed the concerto (Auer’s version) in 1937 and Yehudi Menuhin in 1949. On the other hand, recordings by new school violinists such as Anne Sophie-Mutter in 1985 and Maxim Vengerov in 1990 are also some of the most favoured modern recordings. This research attempts to compare the interpretation differences between the two violin schools as evident by performances of artists from each school.

In 2021, AIM Classical welcomes Grevillea Ensemble as Ensemble in Residence. The highly experienced artists in this duo ensemble - Wendy Dixon and David Miller - will be performing at the Australian Institute of Music Sydney campus throughout 2021 and assisting undergraduate students with their ensemble and collaborative studies.

For over 20 years, Grevillea Ensemble has communicated and shared their love of music with their audience. Lauded for their "imaginative programming" and "invariably insightful performances", since 2004, Grevillea has been a duo of voice and piano in collaboration with guest artists.

An experienced pedagogue and performer, Wendy Dixon is soprano in Grevillea Ensemble. She is well known throughout New Zealand and Australia in opera, concert and recital. She has sung as a guest artist soprano soloist with Opera Australia, Victoria State Opera, Opera Queensland, State Opera of South Australia, New Zealand International Festival of the Arts, opera companies in New Zealand, and the major orchestras in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Mexico. Wendy currently teaches at the Australian Institute of Music, primarily as Vocal and Language for Singers tutor.

David Miller is the pianist for Grevillea Ensemble and is widely recognised as one of Australia's leading chamber musicians and vocal accompanists. The Sydney Morning Herald has described him as "the role model of Australian accompanists" and in the Queen's Birthday 1995 Honours List he was appointed as a member of the Order of Australia for his service to music. Experienced as a leader in education for ensemble/chamber music/accompaniment tuition, David Miller’s studio has produced many of Australia’s finest young accompanists. He was instrumental in setting up the Geoffrey Parsons Australian Scholarship and other awards to assist all young accompanists and repetiteurs in the development of their careers. He has conducted master classes and lectures for universities, conservatoriums, music organizations and music conferences in many parts of Australia and Asia.
