SOLACE is a stunning new co-production between our dear friends at Milk Crate Theatre and Box of Birds / Stalker Theatre that excavates the psychological and physiological impulses behind the pursuit of comfort. Once again we will partner with our friends at Q Theatre to host a six month residency for Western Sydney emerging artists to develop a new work, alongside an industry mentor! These artists will present their work in two seasons, one at 107 Redfern and the second at The Joan, Penrith!

2024 is a year with Young People front and centre. Let's Celebrate.
๐ฃ Introducing our ARTSLAB residents for 2023/2024 ๐ฃ
We are so excited to announce the selection of these eight incredible artists, who are working on six new works for the ArtsLab festival in March next year. We had a huge volume of applicants, and the quality was exceptionally high so we are thrilled to welcome these artists to the Shopfront community and can't wait to see what they will produce.
Making up the ArtsLab 23/24 cohort are:
โค๏ธ Mym Kwa - an actor, dancer and theatre-maker of Chinese and Scottish heritage. Mym will be creating a durational dance work which will be presented in the gallery of 107 in March.
๐ Gabriel Faatau'uu-Satiu - a proud Sฤmoan storyteller from western Sydney who has graduated with a Bachelor of Creative Arts, a Masters in Creative Practice underpinned with film school. Gabe will be creating a three channel video work, exploring the intricacies, joy and culture of Pasifika communities which will be presented in the gallery of 107 in March.
๐ Highly Strung Puppets (Tom Hetherington-Welch and Oliver Durbidge) - are writers, directors and puppet artists based and working on Gadigal Land. Together they are developing a puppetry performance work which will span the gallery and theatre spaces at 107 in March.
๐งก Fatima Naqvi - a Pakistani-Australian Shia Muslim visual artist living and working on Dharruk Land. Fatima will be creating a series of drawings, to be exhibited in the gallery at 107 in March.
๐ Emily Whiting and Aiden Smith - A creative duo, Emily is currently studying performance and theatre at Sydney University while Aiden studies Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Together they will be developing an original musical work about legendary pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read which will perform in the theatre space at 107 in March.
๐ Leah Herbert - a vibrant and proudly q***r, fat theater-maker from Wollongong. Leah is developing a new performance work entitled 'Fat Girl' that delves into the complexities of body image and the path to body neutrality which will perform in the theatre space at 107 in March.

We are SO excited for this group of little rock stars to take the stage next week. TENDER is an original musical, featuring SIX (count them, six) original songs by our Junior Ensemble of 9 - 14 year olds. This show is sweet, silly, hilarious and heartfelt and we have been rolling in the aisles and wiping tears from our cheeks in rehearsals.

The winner is given a 3 month residency, an industry mentor, budget, marketing and production support and a spot in our 2024 Season!

We are so proud of Adam, Divya, Irelish and Anna for their hard work, creativity and passion over the last six months to deliver not just one, but two cracking festivals of work at both 107 Redfern, and The Joan Penrith.
These four artists have huge futures ahead, and we are so glad we could play a part in their journeys. We know it's not goodbye, just see you later - and we can't wait to keep watching and supporting them as they set off into arts careers.
We wanted to say a huge thank you to the incredible team at Q Theatre for joining us in this wonderful program. We couldn't deliver this level of support without such an awesome partner, and we can't wait to keep the good vibes going next year!!

๐ End of the Year - Dance and CHEER! ๐ At the end of PRISMS yesterday, our staff boogied away with Good Ramen a local band of Young People! Yesterday was a joyous event that celebrated the wonderful creativity of our Shopfront community, with music filling the streets and laughter filling our space โจ Thank you SO MUCH to all the artists, Young People, parents, audiences, musicians, cafe owners and community members who made yesterday the party that it was! We are so glad to have you all as part of the Shopfront community ๐ Workshop participants have one last week in the building, but it is all party times all the way out from here!
