In May 2021
We discovered a once forgotten 300 Capacity Basement level Night Club right on the strip in Kings Cross, Potts Point.
We signed a lease ton what you might call a real fixer-upper
*No power
*Water Damaged
*No flooring
*An Expired Liquor Licence
*An outdated DA
*Broken mirrors on the wall and bar
holes in the walls where skirting were ripped away
*Wires everywhere that have no sensical purpose
*leaking toilet
*fridges no working
NO AIR CONDITIONING OR VENTILATION
As I mentioned at the beginning
A real Fixer-upper 🤯
Then the second wave of covid 19 lockdowns hit just two weeks after we signed the lease and we are still dealing with this now
How on earth does our government conceive a grant for some and not all is a solution - however that is for another post.
The date is January 27th 2022
renovations are underway, and we are about to begin the challenge of floor covering - YEP we, because this venue is not being built with a badass budget like most.
This is a labour of two working-class people who have jobs and kids and pets and homes an hour out of the city to also maintain, sleep is rare. It is super hard and stressful and frictions get high.
But we are not just business partners we are soulmates and that makes all the difference in the world - for example, S**t gets done at a rate most people can not conceive, we eat sleep breathe and cling to the hope that we are on the right path and it does feel right.
Along the way, we also get to encounter a lot of other Kickass people, who do many things to support us which is humbling and also uplifting, and so I would like to take this introduction to say a special thank you mention to these people and tell them we really needed their support and love them
The first one goes out to Brendon Meow-Sum, who at the time I had known only a short while and he turned up 30 mins later to look at the venue after I called him to come to see, Brendan is one of those guys that are just happy to bring people together, Need a sound engineer - he's your guy, Need a party to fill a night - he's your guy, need to ask a rookie question about DJ events without any judgment - then HE!! is your guy - Thank you Brendon Meow-Sum x
then there is our friend and artist Bill Exit, who loves the attention of social media and who has also been bursting at the seems to upload some content of the work we have done together at this new venue we are calling SWITCH UNDERGROUND, Bill and I spent a good month every day at the venue tripping out the walls with artwork using spray cans to create a unique space that is fun and cool and above all else unique this project took a lot out of Bill Moulton personally but the results are ...well let's wait and see what you all think at the launch 😋Thank you bill for being our Famz.
This group of people are our dear friends who were the first to get excited about this venture and not share their doubts when they saw the state of the venue instead they got excited for us and wished us luck, Katja Filpe -you came hair twirling into our lives and I love your dam face girl! not because you are the best DJ I know, even though I'm biased, but I can tell you are constantly thinking of people that you know to introduce to us for collaborations so that we find success, there are a lot of other reasons as well which ill save for our next catch up x♥
And Adi who is so dam passionate about the libertine way of the old old kings cross and your passion is infectious, you listen with all of your senses and give your full attention it goes without saying you have become my voice of reason and thought-based actions.♥
Ian Humphreyyou believe loyalty is your strength and it is a fine trait, there is also the unwavering support and the way you pitch in at ridiculous hours to move some furniture or build a soundproof wall.
And a special mention to our children who have shared in the project by helping out along the way ♥
