The history of 'Eleanor'

Eleanor Wasn't Just One Car: While many people think of Eleanor as a single car, there were actually eleven different versions of the car built for the 2000 film Gone in 60 Seconds. These cars were meticulously built and customized for different types of scenes, such as stunts, close-ups, and high-speed chases.

The Original 1967 Mustang Had a Special Build: The Eleanor seen in the film was a 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback but had significant modifications to give it a custom, aggressive look. Some of the most notable modifications included custom bodywork, a unique front bumper, a black racing stripe, and a modified C4 Corvette front grille. The car was also fitted with a modified 351 Cleveland V8 engine.

Eleanor's Famous "Look" Was Not Easily Achieved: The team behind the film, including car designer Chip Foose, worked tirelessly to perfect the appearance of Eleanor. The look was so iconic that it almost became its own brand. In fact, the specific combination of body modifications and the Pepper Gray paint with custom black stripes became synonymous with Eleanor's persona. Ford even considered making a production version of the car due to its popularity.

Eleanor's Legacy Inspired Car Culture: After Gone in 60 Seconds was released, Eleanor became a symbol of modern muscle car culture. It wasn’t just the Mustang fans who adopted her as an icon; the combination of classic American muscle with sleek modern design made her a global phenomenon. Many car enthusiasts started to build their own versions, using the iconic Eleanor look as inspiration.

The Legal Battle Over the Name "Eleanor": Interestingly, the name "Eleanor" was a creation of H.B. Halicki, the producer and lead actor of the original 1974 film Gone in 60 Seconds. However, after the release of the 2000 remake, there was a legal battle over who owned the rights to the name "Eleanor." Eventually, Terry Hines (who worked on the film) and Ford reached a settlement, allowing the iconic name to remain a part of car culture.

Eleanor's Role in the Film Wasn't Just for Show: While Eleanor’s iconic look took center stage in the film, her role in the high-speed chases was equally vital. The car was involved in some of the most thrilling chase sequences, making it a core part of the movie's action. In fact, the car was equipped with special stunt features, including reinforced suspension, a strong roll cage, and a custom exhaust to withstand the intense stunt work.

Eleanor in Pop Culture: Beyond just Gone in 60 Seconds, Eleanor has made appearances in various pop culture references and continues to influence the design of muscle cars in video games, television shows, and other movies. The Eleanor Mustang has become an enduring symbol of speed, style, and rebellion.
