Former MP and popular actor Ranjan Ramanayake and former Sri Lankan cricketer T.M. Dilshan announced the forming of a new political party, the United Democratic Voice (UDV). Ranjan is the leader of the party while Dilshan is the national organiser.

The party, which will contest under the ‘microphone’ symbol, is set to unveil its manifesto ahead of the upcoming General Election.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has dissolved parliament to make way for a snap general election. The parliamentary election will be held on Nov. 14,

The Extraordinary Gazette notification issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake dissolving the Parliament of Sri Lanka effective from midnight today (24), has been published by the Department of Government Printing.
The proclamation dissolves Parliament with effect from midnight today and summons the new Parliament to meet on the November 21, 2024.

Veteran Sri Lankan traditional dancer, choreographer and teacher, Deshamanya Dr. Vajira Chitrasena has passed away at the age of 92.
Vajira and her husband Chitrasena are known for their close bond with India and for their contributions in strengthening the ties between the two countries in the field of arts. She made her debut as soloist in the role of Prakriti in the ballet ‘Chandali’ in 1952.

National People’s Power (NPP) presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been elected as the 9th Executive President of Sri Lanka.

The election commission formally announced on Sunday (September 22) NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election.

The commission said on its website that Mr. Dissanayake, 55, won the presidency with 42.31% of the vote at Saturday’s (September 21) election, pushing opposition leader Sajith Premadasa to second place and incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe to a distant third.

The Chairman of the Election Commission, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake officially announced the counting of second preference of the two leading candidates of the 2024 presidential election, in view of the prevailing situation of the vote results.

NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake was leading Sri Lanka’s presidential election after knocking out the incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe from the race, as officials on Sunday began a second round of vote counting for the first time in the nation’s history.
