Our featured performing artist for Make Art Night this Friday is ACAC Collective member Emily Smith and her musical duo partner Hugh Blackall!

Emily Smith is an art therapist and trauma-informed voice teacher working in Sydney. While her creative energy is largely focused on helping others heal through therapeutic art making, singing, and songwriting, she nurtures her own artistic identity through musical collaboration and an ongoing journey to embrace her authentic voice.

Hugh Blackall is a songwriter, producer, singer and guitarist from Sydney who was raised on Powderfinger and The Cranberries in the back of the family car. From pensive folk to soaring pop rock; international pop superstars to his brother's various metalcore bands; his influences are varied, but his work is always driven by the joy of listening and sharing music.

Emily and Hugh began making music together in 2019 and, after a COVID-induced hiatus, are thrilled to be creating again as a duo. While still a work in progress, they find inspiration and support through their creative partnership, with a shared love of singing in harmony and belief that music is better with friends.

We are delighted that Naomi Downie will be our featured visual artist at Make Art: Open Stage, Open Wall on Friday 22nd November.

Naomi’s work is influenced by the intersection of creativity, contemplation and connection with nature and the urban worlds she resides in. She has explored the challenge of drawing while at music gigs, in situ by the river, at poetry readings at cafes and attending dance rehearsals. Channelling her many influences and bringing them into the studio, each brush stroke of her oil paintings are imbued with feeling and meaning.

Naomi’s childhood was filled with running down Melbourne’s laneways and climbing fences to visit neighbours. Her formative teenage years saw a move to Newcastle, where picnics at Blackbutt were regular and sunrise tai chi on Nobbys headland time shared.
She has studied under professional artists, with Ron Hartree Art Studio in Newcastle, Marie Brahe at John Orban Studio in Glebe and currently under Matilda Mitchelle in Petersham. Naomi is currently looking forward to her group show Reflections in October at Gallery 371.
