Last night's Members Christmas Party was once again a great success!

Happy 180th Birthday to the City of Sydney!

On 20 July 1842 the City of Sydney Council was created, with a remit for the “better protection, care and management of the local interests of the inhabitants of the said Town and for the improvement thereof”.

The City’s early boundaries stretched from Pyrmont and The Rocks to Surry Hills and Moore Park.

There was a 24-member council – who held their first council meetings in local markets and hotels – and an initial staff of just eight.

Although many of its original responsibilities have evolved over time, the City’s role in leading, governing and serving the community remains.

Over the past 180 years, the council of Sydney has helped build a great global city and fostered an incredibly diverse and successful community – I am proud to be part of that history.
