Can you believe that Trinity Grammar School has over 13 bands? They all come together at the yearly BATTLE OF THE BANDS competition in the hall for a spectacular showdown! The talent on display is totally professional and the stage craft is top shelf! It's a delight to photograph too!

𝗦𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗬’𝗦 𝗕𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗖 𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗗𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗢 𝗔𝗗𝗠𝗜𝗧 𝗚𝗜𝗥𝗟 𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦

Following the announcement that St Mary's Cathedral College Sydney is to be coeducational from 2025, the Choir of St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, will be admitting Girl Choristers from January 2025, with each chorister receiving a full scholarship to study at St Mary’s Cathedral College.

With foundations stretching back to 1818, St Mary’s Cathedral Choir is Australia’s oldest musical ensemble, and the Girl Choristers will form a new Girls’ Choir, which, in addition to the current Boys’ Choir, will continue to strengthen and sustain the musical life of the Cathedral.

Catholic Archbishop of Sydney Most Reverend Anthony Fisher OP welcomed the new addition that will enrich the musical life of the Cathedral.

“I’m pleased to support the broadening of our Cathedral Sacred Music programme to encompass the recruitment of Girl Choristers from 2025.”

“Liturgical Music is an important part of how we pray at St Mary’s, and I’m delighted that Girl Choristers will soon be able to share in singing the praises of almighty God in the Cathedral,” Archbishop Fisher said.

Announcing the news, recently appointed Director of Music Daniel Justin was thrilled to be leading this significant change.

“It’s a great honour to be leading the choir of St Mary’s during this significant moment in the life of our Cathedral, and this milestone for Sacred Music in Australia.”

“I’m so pleased that the announcement of coeducation at the College will offer girls the same experiences and the first-class musical education which our boy choristers receive”

“The commitment to being a Chorister is significant, both for the child and the parent, but we see every day how children blossom from their experience of singing in the choir,” Mr Justin said.

Applications for Girl Choristers can be completed initially through enrolment on the St Mary’s Cathedral College website https://smccsydney.syd.catholic.edu.au, and further information regarding this year’s Chorister Experience Days will be published at the end of February.

A beautiful Australian Magpie, spotted on assignment for a special client.

When I saw this post I instantly recognised the bench! It located near the Polish Section of Rookwood Necropolis, near the graves of the many Polish WW2 Veterans and if you look closely in the background, is the scarf and hat of a Parramatta Eels fan!

I remember walking around, reading headstones and names when this Magpie settled on the bench. I had in my head this scene with the bird flying between the WW2 headstones, like a fighter plane! He flew around and returned, so I thought the chances were good and waited....and waited....and waited. I snapped this photo and left!

We have lots of amazing birds and animals visiting our beautiful memorial parks. You may have seen an Australian magpie resting on a tree branch, bench, or headstone. 🐦🦉🦆

Magpies are very intelligent and never forget a face, they can mimic other animals or humans they hear and mate with their partner until death.

As I prepare my equipment to photograph midnight Mass at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney tonight, I just thought I'd put up an end of year post. This post is a big shout-out to all who have been super supportive of Giovanni Portelli Photography this year! It hasn't been the easiest year, but it's been super busy and I'm so thankful to each and everyone of you for your ongoing support and encouragement. I have to say I'm the luckiest photographer out there to have all of you behind me! To everyone who comes up to me and says "hi" when I'm on assignment, I truly appreciate that even if I can't express it whilst working!
