NOW we have come into the traditional time of Brighid, of spring, of fire, creativity, of healing in the southern hemisphere, I find this inspiring and beautiful image appropriate . . .
Born of the current northern hemisphere time, the ‘other side of the coin’, clearly by the image's elements, the coming northern solstice is a renewal of light, the kindling of fire. For us in the south, the zenith of abundance recurs, heralding our journey into the dark, the moon, the depths of Goddess.
And combining our two hemispheres into one whole, a new era emerges for us all, the two becomes one, a gateway opens for us all . . .
2020 has been such a challenging year. And in fact the last twenty-year cycle has been difficult, from its beginning in the year 2000, which saw the attack on the Twin Towers in New York, to its end in 2020 in which we experienced the pandemic. The good news is that the Winter Solstice 2020 on 21 December marks the beginning of a new cycle of 20 years.
Druid and astrologer, Sarah Fuhro, writes: “We are in a period of endings, and beginnings. This long strange year is ending, and a twenty-year cycle, which began in 2000 will end on the Winter Solstice… Jupiter and Saturn represent a matched set of oppositions. Jupiter is expansive, Saturn concentrates. Together, like the opposing signs of each full Moon to the Sun, they present a wholeness of some aspect of energy and creativity. December 21, as we celebrate the return of the Sun to the Northern Hemisphere, Jupiter and Saturn come together in the first degree of a new sign, Aquarius, after a year-long journey spent in Capricorn with Pluto and Pallas Athena. Jupiter and Saturn meet every twenty years and we often date historical periods from these conjunctions.”
So a new cycle begins at the solstice! To prepare for this, and to re-charge and re-calibrate, you might like to practice a special meditation for each of the twelve days preceding the solstice. You could choose your own form of meditation, or you could follow a sequence of twelve meditations being offered by the Druid author and member of the Order Philip Carr-Gomm.
