Bathurst race 5 - 10 Balraj: Hes $1.60 BUT he’s just a nice anchor in a multi. He just wins this. Fastest sections of the meeting first up at Newcastle from a long way further back than he’ll get tonight. He’s a 🔒

Race 6 - 1 Flying Colours: Saw this trip 7 days ago. He was a bit disappointing but draws better again here and the company isn’t as tough. For him the rain might have to stay away as the track bias suggests anything on the inside struggles under very wet conditions. $3.6 today, last week you were getting 2.5. Worth another go.

Pretty skinny night otherwise. Laurie Dee might go ok but they’ve knocked the price around a but. Everything else is too short to touch.

Tonight at Penrith:

Race 1: Lochart Shard should be going very close. The connections were all on course last time and wouldn't surprise if they were there again. Went 56 last time drawing the same. ($2.50)

Race 3: Like the way Blazing Shannon hit the line last time after interference into the first corner, same sort of map into the race and could go just as well here. Possible drifter in the market late (already $5.50 -> $7) and may be worth some thought E/W if you can get any better odds. ($7/$2.20)

Race 5: Double Encounter won really easily the last time he came to Penrith and looks down in grade again. ($2.50) I think this is the most reliable favourite way of the night.

For what it's worth, here's my take on the Giga Kick fiasco... "If the connections of Giga Kick boot Craig Williams off I hope Craig never forgets, never rides for Clayton Douglas again and Giga Kick gets beaten a furlong in the Everest. By doing what he did, Willo may have save the horse for later in the campaign. That wasn't the grand final... Camps are far too quick to sack riders off one poor outing."

As the Carnival of Miracles comes to a close it's important to look back and realise what superb efforts right across the series. None more so than Mach Dan who although wasn't a feature in the Miracle Mile, ran a Grand Final style race in the Newcastle Mile. It was an honour and a thrill to call such a great race!

Shirley Turnbull Memorial this evening from Bathurst. A wonderful program with quality right across the 8 races. This is THE place to be tonight.

Race 5 (Group 2): 5 - Jilliby Kung Fu ($3.40). Previous place getter in a record breaking Miracle Mile. Won this year's Tony Turnbull over 2300m at Menangle and it appears he has been targeted for this race. Has the better of the draws on the rest of the rivals and is going to be awfully hard to stop. Hardest to beat 13 - Mach Shard. Group 1 winner over 2400m but just needs some luck. 14 - Petes Said So and 10 Jay OK racing consistently could also get some minor money.

BEST BET: Race 7: 10 - Haveyoucheckedin: Monstrous effort last start to nearly win the Western Regional Group 3 for 2YO C&G's. This race is easier and despite not having run for nearly three weeks, these long gaps between runs don't seem to phase this runner and he holds his fitness quite well. Key rivals poorly drawn in comparison. He'll be hard to stop at the $2.40.

For perspective on the ID Pacing Grand Final. If Act Now had run the same sections in last year's Shirley Turnbull Memorial (over broadly the same distance) it would have been 3 seconds behind on the lead time in slop conditions. It was an incredible effort for I Cast No Shadow to pick up Act Now and win.

So lately I've been making Finding Winners look REALLY difficult! NOT TO WORRY THOUGH because this weekend's best bets are out nice and early!

Menangle:

Race 4 - 7 Silk Cloud. Loves this time of year. Using this race as a stepping stone towards NSWBC. Big danger.

Race 7 - 11 A Gs White Socks. Massive drop in grade. Went super first up and should have the power to overhaul them here.

Best from Bathurst tonight:

Race 1: 5 - Selsey Bill - I have a lot of time for this horse and while 2260 isn't ideal it does look to have the most ability here.

Race 4 - 8 Camanchi Warrior: Menangle winner last time out and does have the speed to potentially get across and lead here. Nathan Turnbull in excellent driving form. Favourite looking to get a cheap run and not convinced by its previous efforts before a last start improvement.

Racing returns to Newcastle Harness Racing Club today for a book of 9 races. Not a bad betting card for punters. My thoughts are below as Phil Roberts will be calling all the on-track action.

Race 1: Really impressed with Just Feelngood (1) last start. Although beaten quite a distance the time was very strong and was pressured consistently in the run. Longer turnaround and weaker meeting both suitable. The $5.50 quote looks to be quite appealing with front running Robert Morris aboard. Hardest to beat is drawn beside as Jack Callaghan drives Glenn Innes Boy at the same opening quote. Split bet suggested 1 and 2.

Race 2: Wallaroy Boy (10) drops a long way in class here and gets a nice draw to be centrefield in the moving line. This really is a winnable race for him. $5.50 quote is overs (marked at $3). Hard to make a case for a lot of these others. Best of them is Avaiden (2) with a good effort behind Majic Moment. Suggested bet: 10 WIN

Race 3: Shorts for Bettors Beyond (3) for Robert Morris after being down the track at Menangle last time out. Second up effort should be better and a three week break might have been a blessing. Willroby (1) hardest to beat with the good draw but might have forgotten how to win. Suggested bet 3 WIN.

Race 4: Very even race with several key chances. Adams It, Jeffcoate, Kudos Mason the best chances with Parrabellum the other minor player. Suggested bet 5 Place.

Race 5: Much better effort from Bee Okay (10) last time out when third in good time for this class (1.55.8 ). Before that was in the lead bunch at Penrith. Nightwatch Star the main danger, failing to finish at Tamworth but showed decent ability in previous efforts in the South/West areas. Suggested place: 10 WIN.

Race 6: Didn’t mind the run of Beatboxer (1) and gets a good draw again. Went well over both journeys. Another good chance here following a quick beginner. Toughest to beat is Big Shadow scoring a massive win last time in maiden company. Finds this tougher but is a major danger again running decent time. Suggested Bet 1 WIN.

Race 7: Toughest race of the day. Boomer Rock (5) taking on the older horses might go well here and the scratching inside helps. Is better than the last start 9th after doing plenty wrong in the run. Kudos Albertina (3) isn’t without claims and might get the cold drop on the favourite from the speedmap. Each Way value at the $12 quote. Suggested bet 3 PLACE.

Race 8: Quite keen on Stealth Bomba (3) here. Nothing went to plan last time and before that put in some honest claims behind Orchid Stride, who subsequently ran a good race behind B K Swy and Aalesund. Certainly a lower calibre of horse here. Wunderland (9) first up for the new stable will offer stiff competition here. The runs in Victoria were promising and is now trained by a pretty swift operation. Suggested bet 3 WIN.

Race 9: Yuko (2) offered a brave showing last time here and can win again. Last effort was particularly poor but will be looking to bounce back. What Now Shannon ran some decent time last time out at huge odds and could be value at $34 and is very backable at $7 for the place. Speedmap dependant but prominent showing wouldn’t surprise. Please Shuddup ( 8 ) failed in the 90 grade last time out but comes back to a 65 event with some claims. Suggested bet 5 PLACE.

We are certainly against the weather God's at Racing at Club Menangle in one of the toughest meetings of the year. Regardless, a full book of 10 races and three Group 1 trot finals to enjoy as well. Best for the meeting is:

Race 6: 10 Zeuss Bromac: Defeated Stylish Memphis at Group level when conditions were last like these and this is a clearly easier assignment. Last start. was superb and whilst his pattern is to get back, Alta Orlando will find a little bit of early tempo and that is likely to be to his detriment. Finding less affected going on the outside will be a key here as well. $2.40 and the current market mover on TAB Fixed Odds (tab.com.au)

Really like the chances of B K Swy (Race 3 number 9). Jack Trainor is doing a fantastic job with this mare who does have a few tricks but lots of class and with Jemma Coney claim, gets into a race that is certainly beneath her. Race profile suits perfectly and it'll be very exciting to see her wind off some good sections at the end. Fixed odds favourite and justifiably so (tab.com.au).

Good luck to anyone having an investment this evening! Crossing our fingers that the rain is a bit more subdued than was anticipated.

Racing from Penrith tonight. Two best bets as per the Sky Racing Radio Sydney whip around this morning:

Race 1: 1 - Classic Grange. Like the inside barrier here. Has shown more than enough at this track and trip at recent efforts, lead looks to be available relatively softly and from there will be big danger.

Race 6: 4 - La Puddie. Busted the clock last time out at Bathurst when running only 0.8s slower than Ripp did in a 3C&G-G1 (who also qualified strongly for the APG G1 on the 30th April). Horse with the most gate speed in the pack and should be hard to beat in a small field.

LAY OF THE DAY: Race 2 - Bella Bling: Not keen on this horse at all over an untested trip and didn't signal to me that she wanted further on last effort.
