There are still ways to personalise a funeral or a wake, even if it is a formal or religious service, such as the state funeral held last month for tennis great, Neale Fraser.

Although Neale’s state funeral was attended by many dignitaries and politicians, the simple arrangement of the mini Davis Cup trophy, wooden racquet and Fraser's trademark terry-towelling hat that flanked the coffin really helped to personalised the event.

A beautiful farewell for a beautiful lady - champagne and flowers at the Bilgola Surf Life Saving Club for Joan!

When Joan Gauld died in July 2024, her daughter Jen had only been to two funerals before and she didn’t realise it was possible to personalise a funeral and a wake.

However, after Karin Slade from Funerals By Design and Heavenly Catering was recommended to her by a friend, Jen was relieved to discover she could farewell her mum in the way she would have wanted to be farewelled.

Jen explains how Karin made the entire funeral and wake planning process easy and seamless, not only going above and beyond to support Jen and her family in their time of grief, but continuing to reach out and support them after the event.

Allocate enough time for an open mic session during wake so people can open up and say something in an informal way that doesn’t involve the stress of preparing a formal speech or a eulogy.

If people are comfortable being recorded, the open mic session can be added to the living memorial as a way to add layers of memory from different perspectives and different parts of the deceased person’s life.

When we experience deep love for someone and they love us in return, it fills our lives with joy, comfort, and a sense of connection. It is as if we are surrounded by light and warmth that makes everything brighter and more meaningful.

When they die, the memory of that love can still provide a sense of warmth, even in the darkness of grief.

Though the person may no longer be physically present, their love can continue to surround us, offering solace and reminding us of the beauty of having felt "the sun on both sides" during their life.

Arla's "Christmas in July" Memorial and Wake

How do you celebrate the life of a woman who was fanatical about food and crazy about Christmas? With a “Christmas in July” themed memorial service and wake, of course! When Chantal Gibbs’ mum, Arlene (Arla) Gibbs, died on 25th July this year, Chantal couldn’t believe the timing. “Mum died on the actual day of Christmas in July, the 25th,” explains Chantal. “This was incredibly appropriate for Mum as she truly embraced everything Christmas. “While we were planning her celebration of life, I spoke to my brother, Anthony, Mum’s partner, Leigh, and some of Mum’s closest friends about the idea of creating a Christmas-themed farewell as a tribute for Mum and they all liked the idea too. “But it wasn’t until we found our wake caterer and organiser, Heavenly Catering’s Karin Slade, that we realised exactly how we could bring this idea to life and really farewell Mum in an incredibly personal and meaningful way.” https://heavenlycatering.com.au/arlas-christmas-in-july-memorial-and-wake

I'll make sure I understand what made your loved one so special. I want to know about their hobbies, their personal style and their humorous little quirks (because we all have them). Then I’ll help you celebrate their life in a loving, joyous and respectful way.

I’ll offer suggestions, take care of every detail and give you complete price transparency – sourcing all aspects of the funeral at wholesale prices wherever possible. I’ll also give 10% of all profits to a charity or cause of your choice.
