Robyn Friend fully planned and wrote out her celebration of life, making it so much easier for her family to adhere to her instructions and wishes and ensuring she could really “go her own way”.

There were 6 envelopes for different people, each designating a section of her celebration.

One of these envelopes was for the fellow members of her netball team who received strict orders to wear a special outfit and carry out a ‘tribute song’ performance as decreed by ‘Mother Duck’ Robyn, which she used to join in when they were on tour.

I cannot thank you enough for your compassion, understanding, professionalism and thoughtfulness, not to mention the amazing food provided for the recent service for my Dad.

You eased the load of organising the service and I was immediately confident and comforted that you would provide top notch service, and you did.

The food was fresh, deliciously yummy and perfect.

Thank you so much Karin and keep doing what you do so well. - Lexa

#4 Create a Photo Display

Photos spark memories and lead to people sharing stories. This is such an important part of any funeral and memorial but it can take a bit of time to organise so enlist help and ask close friends and family to share their photos with you.

Photos can be presented both physically and digitally as a slide show – a great job to give to the more technical members of the family.

Use photo boards, hang photos on a line of string with mini pegs, have an entire table of framed photos from around their house, scatter photos around the tables in the venue so people can see different photos wherever they move to.

You could also ask guests to BYO a copy of their favourite photo of the deceased, which is a great way to collate photos from all parts and stages of their life.

“As a Funeral Director and Funeral Celebrant I was so happy to read Karin Slade's book, Where There's A Will There's a Wake.

It answers all the questions that confuse people on what they can and can't do after they die in terms of funerals and memorials and she points out that there is so much more that can be done to have an authentic farewell beyond the stuffy, rushed services in crematorium chapels which have become the sad standard.”

Arla’s “Christmas in July” Memorial and Wake was the perfect way to celebrate the life of a woman who was fanatical about food and crazy about Christmas!

“Mum died on the actual day of Christmas in July, the 25th,” explains Chantal. “This was incredibly appropriate for Mum as she truly embraced everything Christmas.

“While we were planning her celebration of life, I spoke to my brother, Anthony, Mum’s partner, Leigh, and some of Mum’s closest friends about the idea of creating a Christmas-themed farewell as a tribute for Mum and they all liked the idea too.

“But it wasn’t until we found our wake caterer and organiser, Heavenly Catering’s Karin Slade, that we realised exactly how we could bring this idea to life and really farewell Mum in an incredibly personal and meaningful way.”

Irish wakes are a way to keep vigil over the dead until the time of burial, and their wakes are occasions mixed with both sadness and merriment.

Traditional Irish wakes called for drinks, pranks, games, and songs. In fact, up until the mid-1900s lewd songs, pranks and games were commonplace at wakes.

Sometimes there were even contests of strength which included lifting the co**se!

Another prank involved hiding under the co**se’s bed and shaking it when someone walked in, scaring the living daylights out of them.

How do you celebrate the life of a woman who was fanatical about food and crazy about Christmas?

With a “Christmas in July” themed memorial service and wake, of course!
When Chantal Gibbs’ mum, Arlene (Arla) Gibbs, died on 25th July this year, Chantal couldn’t believe the timing.

“Mum died on the actual day of Christmas in July, the 25th,” explains Chantal. “This was incredibly appropriate for Mum as she truly embraced everything Christmas.

“In the wee small hours of the morning, just weeks before her father’s death, Jackie had the great fortune to stumble upon Karin Slade from Funerals by Design.

“Heartbreakingly, hours earlier, the nursing home had suggested I consider making funeral plans for my darling dad,” says Jackie. “Struggling to come to terms with this while being in the midst of COVID, all I could imagine was how dire and sombre the funeral would be with our small family and a few friends sitting 1.5m apart in a large, cold crematorium chapel.”

“Karin rang me back and her first question to me was ‘why do you want to use a funeral home?’

“I was a bit taken aback, but she then explained that a funeral could actually be held anywhere… which was completely news to me.”

Roy loved his British fare, so we served fish and chip baskets, lemon tarts and Glenfiddich whisky shots at his wake.

International Widows' Day is observed every year on 23 June to spread awareness about experiences of widows and to gather the support that they need.

If you’re a widow living in Australia, regardless of your age, you do not need to suffer alone!

Grief Connect is a website founded by Michelle, who was widowed at 38 when her partner Nathan died unexpectedly. Michelle was left to manage not only her own grief, but that of their young children.

On this valuable website you’ll find bereavement education and support, as well as links to online spaces where you can have honest discussions about the harsh realities of losing a partner.

Our Story

After experiencing 8 deaths in 5 months, I knew there had to be a better way to say good-bye.

I believe every wake or funeral should be as individual as the person and as caring as the family that’s left behind. I know what it’s like to feel numb with grief yet forced to make important decisions. That’s why I’ll give you the time and space you need to make informed decisions about how you will say your final good-byes.

I'll make sure I understand what made your loved one so special. I want to know about their hobbies, their personal style and their humorous little quirks (because we all have them). Then I’ll help you celebrate their life in a loving, joyous and respectful way.

I’ll offer suggestions, take care of every detail and give you complete price transparency – sourcing all aspects of the funeral at wholesale prices wherever possible. I’ll also give 10% of all profits to a charity or cause of your choice.
