Josh White was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, actor and civil rights activist. He also recorded under the names Pinewood Tom and Tippy Barton in the 1930s. Moorhead, deep in the Mississippi Delta, where the Southern (Railway) crosses the Dog (Yazoo Delta Railroad), a place steeped in Blues history. Hear the story and W.C. Handy's song recorded by Bessie Smith, on JuzBlooz tonight. Bessie will be up against her mentor, Ma Rainey in a pair of 1925 recordings.
What else? Beth Hart tackles Billie Holiday, Richard Johnston sings with Jessie Mae Hemphill and covers Junior Kimbrough, which brings us inevitably into Fat Possum territory and back to Mississippi.

Rev Gary Davis, Rev Robert Wilkins, Skip James and Blind Willie Johnson all knew what it was to live a blues life AND explore their spiritual side, including becoming a preacher for two of them. This is the music that Lazy Lester explores tonight on JuzBlooz. Expect to hear from these guys plus Ry Cooder, Son Lewis, The Heritage Blues Orchestra, Dave Diprose, Pops Staples (and family) and more!

It's Chicago Blues Birthday Party Time, circa January 1956!! Lazy Lester stumbled across this poster and wondered just who else might have been at Elmo's party? This event, almost exactly 68 years ago, inspires tonight's JuzBlooz program. Think Muddy, Wolf, the Walters (Big and Little), but what about the second tier Chicago bluesmen like Morris Pejoe, Johhny Rogers and Jo Jo Williams?
Tune in to JuzBlooz and find out - 8:30pm Tuesday on 3WAY-FM 103.7 Mhz Warrnambool VIC or play anytime it from https://3wayfm.org.au/programs/juzblooz/

Here it is. Lazy Lester presents the big JuzBlooz Christmas program, featuring Christmas-themed tracks recorded throughout the full history (well, almost!) of recorded blues, from Blind Blake in 1928 through to Uncle Mick (Kolassa)'s Christmas Album. Some classics in tonight's playlist, some more obscure tracks, but 100% guaranteed zero Christmas elevator music, blues or not! Maria Muldaur, Long John Baldry, C.W. Stoneking, The Black Sorrows, LIghtning Hopkins. Even a 3-min 1928 sermon from the Rev A.W. Nix - that's what I'm talkin' 'bout!

Get a load of these guys!
Lazy Lester takes us down a couple of rabbit holes on JuzBlooz this week! The first one is a warren of little known and seldom recorded blues harp players from the 1920s - 30s. I mean, who's ever hear of Palmer McAbee or Alfred Lewis? The second is an outlying rabbit hole containing Catfish Keith, Ry Cooder and the enigmatic but magnetic Bahaman guitarist Joseph Spence. You might also hear some Texas blues chicks, Ernie Hawkins, Colin Linden and more.
JuzBlooz - 8.30pm Tuesdays on 3WAY-FM 103.7 or listen at your leisure from www.3wayfm.org.au

The old bluesmen seemed to have a thing about big-legged women. Maybe they were ahead of their time? Lazy Lester spins two version of that song tonight by these look-alike guys. Plus a good serve of 1930s blues from people like Robert Petway, Johnnie Temple and Walter Davis. Plus Robert Lighthouse covering Tampa Red, Hendrix and Elmore James. Of course there's more!
JuzBlooz - 8.30pm Tuesdays on 3WAY-FM 103.7 MHz Warrnambool or play it at your leisure from www.3wayfm.org.au

Guys with accordions, guys with checked shirts, guys with white beards and guys with white hats. What do they have in common? Lazy Lester has conscripted them all to pump out some great BLUES (and Zydeco) on JuzBlooz tonight. It's not just about the guys - Lester will be spinning a track from the very first indigenous Australian album which just happens to be a jazz/blues recording.
JuzBlooz - Listen in at 8:30pm Tuesdays on 3WAY-FM 103.7 MHz in Warrnambool VIC, or play it anywhere at your leisure from www.3wayfm.org.au

The JuzBlooz Story

BLUES radio program on 3WAY-FM 103.7 MHZ, Warrnambool VIC, Australia. Presented by Lazy Lester - Tuesdays at 8.30pm. A century of blues music & culture.

First of all, Lazy Lester acknowledges the appropriation of his radio name from the REAL Lazy Lester, Leslie Johnson (with apologies if neccesary). It started out as a joke, and just kinda stuck! There, I've said it. Lester was turned on to the blues via contemporary artists of the late 1960s / early 1970s when he was an impressionable teenager. Your Claptons and Mayalls, etc. British invasion stuff. Always liked the Stones too, but weren't they Rock 'n' Roll? However, his life was changed forever by two events around that time:

  • Watching Brownie McGhee lurch onto the stage at Dallas Brooks Hall, Melbourne. Close behind him, with one hand on Brownie's shoulder, trailed the blind Sonny Terry. Brownie helped Sonny into his chair and for the next 90 minutes, the two of them mesmerised their audience with the powerful simplicity of their music. No speaker stacks. No gimmicks. Real music.

  • Buying a copy of the Great Blues Men double album (Vanguard VSD 25/26) on 24th April 1973 (the date is scrawled inside the sleeve of the LP), opening his ears to the likes of Rev Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, Sleepy John Estes, Big Bill Broonzy....

  • Other DJs in Warrnambool
