‘Ruth Asawa and the Artist-Mother at Midcentury’ relates how a group of artist-mothers in postwar San Francisco refused the centuries-old belief that a woman could not make art while also raising children.

This book focuses on sculptor Ruth Asawa and explores her dialogue with fellow artist-moms like Merry Renk, Imogen Cunningham, and Sally Woodbridge. It explores their work, life and vision, from the intimacy of their homes and ateliers to their activism in the public sphere, specifically in schools, and their relevance in the art world.

We’re grateful this book introduced us to many wonderful works, and we feel inspired by the journey of these remarkable women to juggle our multiple roles with curiosity and to let them fuel each other.

The hand-knotted Ybriger brush has been sitting on our shelves for a while. Now it comes with a storybook of its own too. ‘Im Besengebiet / Field of Brooms’ is the result of what happens when you start a conversation with the simple objects that surround you everyday. We wish every object could have a book like this.

Industrial designer Flavia Brändle and jewellery designer and filmmaker Margrit Linder shared an admiration for the traditional Swiss hand brooms they had come across on several occasions. It initiated an exploration that took them along crafts(wo)men, experts and landscapes, first in Switzerland, then in Europe, and finally across the world.

This beautifully designed book looks at the hand broom from historical, cultural and ecological perspectives, and serves a multitude of documentary photographs, illustrations and beautiful samples that put the simple object in a well-deserved spotlight.

Whether you love sweeping or not, this book is a generous gift to anyone interested in craft and its place in society.

That’s why we’ve added some new workshop dates in the weeks to come. In our ‘Field Bouquet’ workshops, we share the joys of working with local and seasonal flowers, we assist you while arranging your own very personal composition, and give you some tips to get the most out of your bouquets at home.
