Our creative house sits geographically in a very symbolic place, between the majestic Town Hall of Saint-Gilles and its historic Tudor-style prison. At Les Passagées, we use multiple artistic forms to explore how our external environment influences our inner sensations. Our neighborhood is an essential part of this. That’s why, some of our upcoming projects include research on the impact of prison systems in modern society to create new artistic ways to connect to our invisible neighbors, the prison & its surroundings.

This unique position takes on deeper meaning through the lens of the documentary Emperors of Nothing (La Peine) by Cédric Gerbehaye .
The poignant film offers an intimate look inside Saint-Gilles prison, exploring the human stories and daily lives of inmates, guards, and the prison director - raising questions about punishment, rehabilitation, and justice.

Emperors of Nothing (La Peine) is part of Les Journées Nationales de la Prison (14 - 24 November, 2024), an annual event in Belgium dedicated to understanding incarceration and its societal impact through workshops, discussions, screenings, and other activities.

Our creative process is rooted in long-term collaborations, and research. Each project follows its own unique timeline, as we collectively deconstruct existing works across various disciplines to reimagine and rebuild new, shared creations. At Les Passagées we feel inspired by the work of dancer and choreographer Nacera Belaza and her profound understanding of the subtle layers of our bodies. Like her, we strive to open similar pathways through artistic and culinary experiences, inviting participants to engage and gently reconnect with our senses.

“When we plan our lives, it’s as if we’re constantly split between what’s going to happen, what happened yesterday, and only a small part of our being is in the present. But if we approach the world with sincere openness, everything can be transformed into an opportunity to experience more essential things, to create new inner dimensions. I’d like to bring this into my life, to make it a daily practice. But how can we, in our programmed, planned lives, find these spaces where we listen to ourselves again before taking action? During our upcoming artistic and culinary performance Inner Lands & Scapes (1—7 May), some extracts of Ryoko Sekiguchi’s « Une Lumière » will be narrated by Belgian storyteller Marie-Rose Meysman. She will embrace, appropriate and embody the poet’s imagination.

Ryoko Sekiguchi is a poet, author and translator known for her unique exploration of the relationship between words and food. With around twenty published books, including « Nagori » and « 961 heures à Beyrouth, » she melds storytelling with gastronomy to offer readers insightful and transformative experiences.

Marie-Rose Meysman is a trained actress who has always been interested in the expressive power of movement. She was later drawn to storytelling, moved by the power of the spoken word . Oral literature is now her preferred medium and creative outlet. She has produced several shows that have been performed in Belgium and abroad.

MEET THE ARTISTS • A self-taught dancer-choreographer, Benoît Nieto-Duran delves into the natural geometry of the body, meticulously tracing its pathways with an artist’s eye. Juggling energies and dynamics, he crafts a unique choreographic language. In 2019, he founded the Manima Dance Company, challenging conventional breakdance codes. ••• We are thrilled to have Benoît with us working on our upcoming performance Inner Lands & Scapes, for which he will perform an original piece inspired by his debut show Proteiforme. ••• Join us on 1-7 May for a unique multidisciplinary performance including contemporary art, food, dance, music & more. MEET OUR ARTISTS • Barbara Drazkov - Pianist is a modern music pianist, prepared piano composer and performer based in Brussels. She composes and performs her own music for originally prepared grand and upright pianos. She gives new life to old pianos by making them sound like all different kinds of instruments or electronic samples, mixing a classical technique with an experimental sound searching.
