On the 9th of August, 2024, I played as Spoedsky, a set from 1 AM to 2 AM at Jongerencentrum De Bak in Peer, in honor of the presentation of the delicious beer, Elite tripel. 🍺
Just like the beer, my set was pretty strong and had a lot of character. 💪🏻😎 It contained mainly 'hardgroove techno', and was played on a pretty high tempo of +/- 144 bpm.

About 1 and a half year ago, I started to DJ again. I thought, let’s share some of my electronic music knowledge and thoughts with the audience. I made namely a collection of 20 of my favorite electronic songs, which were published last year (2022).

Where as in the past namely work of Detroit was put under my needle, today it’s more Berlin stuff that’s uploaded to my CDJ’s. Especially the labels Running Back and Watergate Records are very well represented in my top 20.

Noteworthy is also the presence of my favorite artist of this time, Biesmans, with at least 3 tracks and 1 remix. Other artists that frequently convinced me to buy their work are also present in the list, like Kevin Saunderson, Agents Of Time, Captain Mustache, Joyce Muniz, Lauer and Voltaire, to name a few.

The latter being the creator of my absolute favorite track of last year, ‘Frequencies’. A massive piece of marvelous electro music! Check out the playlist, enjoy the music and share me your thoughts.

I was invited by Karousel Events to play the opening set at their event, Klassiko 2023. As the name might suggest, this was an event organised as an ode to the Belgian House and clubbing scene of the '90s.

As I grew up in the '90s, listening to electronic music, visiting clubs like the 'Fuse' and 'Café d’Anvers', and also DJ-ing back then; I knew what to do, play some good old House and Techno music from Detroit and Chicago.
This being said, It must be no surprise to you that my set contains a lot of Detroit and Chicago classics, which were played in those days in the above mentioned clubs. I tried to combine these classics as much as possible with contemporary techno and house music that also resemble the sounds of the 90’s, making as such the set a nice integrated and cohesive whole.
What concerns the classics, I tried to use remastered and reworked versions as much as possible for the sake of a better sound quality. I hope you don’t mind.

Furthermore, I want to thank Karousel Events for giving me the opportunity to play at their event, after being inactive for almost 20 years, sharing the decks together with some wonderful DJ's, like PhiPhi, Manu Riga, Jimmy Goldschmitz and Leo Diaczo

After being 9 months back in business, it is time to reflect on my evolution as a DJ. It gave me some time to develop my own style and to think about what kind of a DJ I really wanted to be.

I consider myself as being a true practitioner of the art of DJing with the sound of the underground, meaning I don’t use Beat Sync, or any visual tools like staked wave forms, etc. Instead I prefer to manually beat match my tracks. I think it is part of the process of mixing that the beats go off from time to time and that the DJ is capable of manually synchronising them again. A trained DJ ear can hear it, but I don’t mind, because it gives me an extra kick when it is instantly corrected by the DJ. I miss that in a lot of contemporary DJ sets. I guess, I rather listen to a human being, to a real ‘artist’, than to a robot.

Furthermore, I believe track selection is also very important. We should educate our public and introduce to them yet unknown new tracks, which are worth listening to, instead of solely playing the obvious stuff which is already very known by the mainstream.

I mentioned the ‘sound of the underground’. Well I play mainly Techno, preferably things that are created by the TR 909, it gives that specific mystical sound to a track, which I associate with ‘Detroit Techno’. I combine my Techno with House and Electro, and many times I use Indie Dance, to bridge between them. Occasionally, I like to put a pinch of old and contemporary Italo and Dark Disco.

What concerns the mix, it resembles the above mentioned, that is why I called my mix ‘Artefact’. Enjoy the ride!

My first time at 'Tomorrowland' and I immediately went to the 'Core Stage', so I could enjoy a dj set performed by one of my true heroes: 'Kevin Saunderson'!
He's considered one of the godfathers of techno and is also called the elevator, because of bringing 'Detroit Techno' in the 80's to a wider audience, thanks to hits like 'Big Fun' and 'Good Life'!

I went to the feedback session of 'DJ Kontest Antwerp' not so long ago. It was a really nice experience; I made a lot of new friends and got some good advice. I was one of the lucky 24, who got selected for this session, based on the mix we've submitted.

On the decks you can see my new buddy, 'Progrezzion', giving me some guiding tour on the DJ booth with the CDJ's and DJM-900 NXS mixer, a bit different from my ddj-400 at home and quite different from my Technics turntables and mixer that I used to own in the past.

On the pictures of the feedback session, you can see on the 2nd table my new buddy, 'Leo Diaczo', having his feedback session with 'Lando Riské', the winning DJ at the 'Extreme Outdoor' contest this year. I also had the honor to sit together with 'Lando' to receive my feedback.

At the end of the day we had a panel discussion together with 'DTM Funk' and 'Kim Mathijs' (from the famous DJ duo 'Ed&Kim') about the next logic steps in our DJ career.

The last couple of years, we could really witness the revival of Indie Dance, Italo and Dark Disco. These genres are gradually more included by DJ's in their sets alongside Techno, House and Electro music. Actually, something DJ Hell was already doing for quite some time. I believe it was in the year 2000 at ‘I Love Techno’ that I heard for the first time such a nice blend. What a pleasant surprise it was for me to hear mister ‘Helmut Geier’ mixing down songs like Giorgio Moroder’s “Chase” and Donna Summer’s “I feel love” with his other selected electronic music. I absolutely loved it! Therefor, I created this time a mix, including Indie Dance, Italo and Dark Disco alongside my beloved Techno and Electro music. Due to the crossover between these selected genres, I called my mix ‘Rock The Disco-Tech’. I hope you are also a fan of such extraordinary blend. Enjoy the trip!

Techno-Tropic Chain Reaction? Well, allow me to give a brief explanation. I’m drawing the parallel between my latest DJ-set and a Controlled Chain Reaction held at a nuclear plant; It’s very energetic, but well-kept between some controlled boundaries, preventing it from exploding.
Techno-Tropic? I came up with this term by making a contraction between the words Techno and Entropic. For those who are interested in some science; Entropy is the measure of disorder. A chain reaction is kept under control by letting off the heat and as such avoiding it from becoming Entropic. Hence, avoiding it from exploding. Now, are you ready to unleash this chain reaction? If so, enjoy the ride, but be cautious, don’t let it get out of control, we don’t want a 2nd Chernobyl…
Furthermore, as a musical side note, I want to add to it that I used this time, next to my beloved Detroit Techno, also quiet some German Techno, from artists like ‘DJ Hell’ and ‘Der Dritte Raum’.

I used to DJ in the past from 1998 until 2004, but due to other priorities in life, I've stopped, but now I'm having my midlife crises I guess :) and I started to DJ again!
