Cooltsalon

Cooltsalon Cooltsalon is: curator, network, exposure platform, zinester. Born in Sofia, operating worldwide

Cooltsalon was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2014 with a series of “1-week-only” site-specific exhibitions. It's currently international, operating on 3 levels: curator, network and exposure platform. Over the years, Cooltsalon’s mission has grown into giving exposure to individual voices hidden behind the collective city life. These opportunities were presented through a variety of events – from gui

ded walks to meet local creative businesses to site-specific exhibitions with international artists. On 12 May 2018 Cooltsalon launched its very first “physical asset” – the ‘Cooltzine’ zine – a publication curated for international, visual dialogue between creative practitioners. The zine carries on the message of re-discovering the city, re-connecting to it and each other as urban dwellers, and is something tangible that can be collected, shared and referenced at any time. Details of our previous projects and current work, can be found at cooltsalon.com

To mark our 10th anniversary, we've invited previous collaborators and friends to design one poster together. The final result will be revealed on 27 December: 10th Anniversary Co-created Poster Drop The third piece of our collaborative poster is from Andy Wooding:

Andy Wooding is a filmmaker, musician, comedian and artist from Liverpool, living in London and working worldwide.

"I entered this project knowing that Oli, Cooltsalon founder, creator and the first artist for this piece, is Ukrainian and I wanted to build on the existing blend of Bulgarian and Ukrainian patterns, so I added a hopeful sky blue background to reference the Ukrainian flag. The flag’s blue is actually deeper but I wanted to create lightness and a dreaminess that mixed well with the red that the second artist Roxane used for her text background. The vases are traditional Ukrainian and the idea was to invert them into what could be seen as bombs or pillars.

I also wanted to test-drive some generative AI so some small images were added that came from the commands “whatever,” “anything,” “generate,” and “feel.” I’m not sure what the images actually are or whether it even matters but AI is here and it’s impacting all businesses and artistic mediums on and off-line so it felt interesting for it to have a small, if insignificant and meaningless, part in the project."

The second piece of our co-created poster is from our long-term collaborator and on/off core team member, Roksana Gotz:

"My voice into pieces” is a deconstruction of my poems. Randomly placed words and sentences from my existing poems that create a puzzle for people to play with. Inviting them to read me, to hear me in a way they choose. My words become theirs, each time creating a new poem, for infinite number of times. My art no longer exists, only new versions of it, that will have my name but the soul of someone else.
I never had an interest in the final form, art is a process and this is my attempt to burn my texts in hope that someone will feel while playing with their ashes."

Roxana Gotz is a conceptual/performance artist and writer. Her work delves into the raw complexities of human connection and identity, exploring themes of trauma, transformation, the tension between hope and despair, brokenness, and the journey toward embracing both light and darkness within.

The first piece of our collaborative poster is from our founder Oli Gots "The pattern is a merger of Ukrainian and Bulgarian traditional embroidery design, vyshyvanka and shevitsa. My roots by birth and my adopted country, my dual legacy neither of which is fully my identity. I placed it across to serve as a starting frame of the prospective poster; something that can be worked with or within it."

Oli Gots (she/her) is is a multi-hyphenate Storyteller, operating between Sofia, Bulgaria and London, UK. Working with both text and visual media, her projects are dedicated to exploring notions of space, place, trauma, belonging and identity. When not realising her own works, Oli curates projects with Cooltsalon, an international collaborative platform she founded in 2014, offering exposure and shared know-how to creative urban dwellers.
