WET & RAINY WEATHER 🌧

Wet feet / hooves on your goats can become a very big issue in extremely rainy weather. Foot rot is a contagious disease of the hooves of goats that occurs most often during persistent periods of rain and wet weather conditions.

This issue, however, can be managed adequately by ensuring the following are done:

▪️keeping your goats hooves trimmed and well maintained

▪️ checking the goats regularly in the kraals, in the morning and when they return from grazing

▪️running the goats through foot baths as and when required; this is more often used for treatment but may also be used as a preventative

▪️providing somewhere dry for the goats to sleep through purpose built sheds or roofed structures in the kraals or in the housing camps

▪️ensure the housing areas (kraals) are regularly cleaned and the goat manure / droppings are frequently removed from the kraals

▪️rotate the kraals (if possible) as & when necessary

Please DO NOT leave your goats to stand in the rain and in wet muddy kraals! Foot rot is a very costly disease and good management practices can go a long way in preventing it from occurring on your farm.

Consult your vet for more info and advise on how to control, treat and / or eliminate foot rot on goats.
