Patricia Nabbosa: Chairperson off Guzakuze from Uganda
Delivered a speech on behalf of Prince Walugembe: The Role and Impact of Traditional Institutions and Leadership in Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment, noting the importance of traditional leadership in mobilizing and empowering rural communities. Patricia Nabbosa Chairperson of Guzakuze from Uganda, delivered a powerful speech on behalf of Prince Walugembe, focusing on the Role and Impact of Traditional Institutions and Leadership in Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment. Nabbosa emphasized the critical role that traditional leadership plays in mobilizing and empowering rural communities to participate in agriculture. She highlighted the Buganda Kingdom's model, where the kingdom uses cooperatives to exploit value chains in key agricultural sectors such as coffee and fruit production.
Nabbosa explained how traditional institutions can streamline the process of resource management, especially in cases where the land is owned by the kingdom. In the Buganda Kingdom, nearly 60% of the land is under traditional leadership, providing a framework where cooperatives work together to enhance market access, ensure fair pricing, and support sustainable farming practices. This approach has empowered local farmers by creating economic opportunities, reducing barriers to market entry, and promoting agricultural growth through the coordination of traditional and modern systems.

IRAS Panel Sessions
Panel 1: Agriculture Environment Adaptation and Facilitation of Adjustment Strategies
Moderated: Julia Farmer
Panelist: Sarah Mosarwa (KGM, Safflower Producer)
Ofentse Ramedupi (Flotek)

This session brought together a diverse panel of experts, including Sarah Mosarwa, a prominent producer of safflower and its products, and Ofentse Ramedupi from Flotek, to explore how agricultural environments are adapting to the impacts of climate change. The panel provided insights into the importance of climate-smart technologies, renewable energy solutions, and water management in creating sustainable agricultural practices.

Sarah Mosarwa shared her journey of evolving safflower production in Botswana, highlighting her partnership with NARDI (National Agricultural Research and Development Institute) for continuous testing and improvement of her crops. Safflower, known for its adaptability and multiple uses, has become a key crop in Sarah’s production line. She emphasized how working with NARDI has helped her refine safflower varieties that are more resilient to climate changes, ensuring better yields and quality for both local and regional markets. Sarah’s efforts have expanded into producing safflower oil and other by-products, creating a more robust value chain for smallholder farmers in the region.

Julia Farmer, an advocate for organic farming practices, discussed how organic farming serves as a crucial component in the fight against climate change. She explained that organic farming methods, which reduce chemical inputs and focus on soil health, are essential for maintaining sustainable ecosystems. Julia expanded on the importance of soil management and the use of natural fertilizers in promoting long-term agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impact.

Ofentse Ramedupi from Flotek shed light on the critical role of water and water management in agricultural adaptation. With climate change directly affecting rainfall patterns and water availability, Flotek has developed innovative water solutions, including irrigation systems and water conservation technologies, which help farmers optimize their water use. Ofentse discussed how effective water management strategies can mitigate the risks posed by droughts and ensure that crops receive the necessary hydration for optimal growth.

The panelists agreed that climate-smart solutions, such as renewable energy, organic farming, and advanced water management technologies, are key to ensuring the resilience of the agricultural sector in the face of climate change. The session concluded with a call to action for farmers to adopt these innovative strategies to sustain their livelihoods and contribute to a more sustainable agricultural future.

She passionately motivated attendees to embrace their farming brands and to confidently share their journeys, regardless of setbacks.
