Patricia Nabbosa Chairperson of Guzakuze from Uganda, delivered a powerful speech on behalf of Prince Walugembe, focusing on the Role and Impact of Traditional Institutions and Leadership in Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment. Nabbosa emphasized the critical role that traditional leadership plays in mobilizing and empowering rural communities to participate in agriculture. She highlighted the Buganda Kingdom's model, where the kingdom uses cooperatives to exploit value chains in key agricultural sectors such as coffee and fruit production.
Nabbosa explained how traditional institutions can streamline the process of resource management, especially in cases where the land is owned by the kingdom. In the Buganda Kingdom, nearly 60% of the land is under traditional leadership, providing a framework where cooperatives work together to enhance market access, ensure fair pricing, and support sustainable farming practices. This approach has empowered local farmers by creating economic opportunities, reducing barriers to market entry, and promoting agricultural growth through the coordination of traditional and modern systems.
