I love the rare times I shoot sports. Action shots are coming but for me, it’s the quiet emotion between plays that is most compelling, the reflection by fans and players alone on all the work, sacrifice, serendipity and time that lead to this one decisive moment.

My first session with Carol was a capturing her as a dancer, but someone is elegant, graceful, and stylish needed amother shoot and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
Much of the shoot was more conceptual (see my next post) but I love the simplicity and delicacy she exhibits here.

Kinsol Trestle on Vancouver Island, restored only a few years ago after decades of being forgotten to the forest. BC has a wonderful Trails To Trails program in which abandoned railroad lines are converted into walking/hiking/horseback riding trails! It’s one of the highest trestle bridges in North America.

It amazes me, in the dead of winter, looking at photos from just a few months earlier, and the conditions we shot in!
Canada’s west coast is much more hospitable than here on the prairies but thankfully my second shoot with (coming up in less than a month) will mercifully be done in studio!

Shooting events for and has brought me into contact with numerous extraordinary artists. I haven’t photographed a K-pop dance crew since in the happy days before the Russian-Ukrainian war so what a joy to discover .apricity ! And wow are they good. Like… REALLY good.

Selecting images to edit after a shoot is the hardest part of the process and with it was almost impossible. She had such incredible intensity in front of the camera and such a gift for posing. These are just a few favorites, but I couldn’t even pick which of these to lead off with. What’s your favorite?

I met by accident. I was editing photos at a restaurant, we got to talking and so we decided to do a session. We shot for something like four hours and could’ve gone longer but by the end, we’d sprayed her with a faucet, soaked her in the shower, then stuck her in a bathtub!
When you’re doing water sets that ruin hair and makeup, make sure your shoot them last!

Russia is trying to kill my friends in Ukraine. My family members. Not soldiers, not politicians, but regular people trying to live their lives. It’s not happening in the abstract, I don’t mean it metaphorically. It’s real. Right now. As I type this. Air raid sirens have been sounding in Kyiv since 5am and missiles continue to hit not military targets but apartment buildings, hospitals, schools. Churches.
They are trying to destroy an entire people, an entire country. You might be tired of hearing about it in the news, but Russia isn’t getting tired of murdering, torturing, ra**ng, burning. They have to be stopped. THEY HAVE TO.

Your eye can see SO much more than a camera sensor or film negative can. Exposure stacking lets you get closer to the way your eye experiences a scene in person by capturing a wider range of light and shadow than what a single photo can do.
Take several shots of the same scene across different exposures (longer and shorter exposures: don’t change your aperture) then combine them in editing software. The shorter exposure keep detail in the highlights, and the longer exposures keep detail in the shadows. The HDR mode on your smartphone does this to a lesser extent, though with less finesse and control.
