What is an insulin pump?

An insulin pump is used by people with diabetes to automatically administer insulin as an alternative to multiple daily injections using a syringe or pen.

Insulin pumps are becoming increasingly popular, but the prototype was actually designed in 1963 and began being used in the late 70's!

As convenient as an insulin pump may seem, they are complex devices. It's important to know how to use the pump properly to avoid problems or address them if they occur. If you're thinking about trying an insulin pump or have questions about the device you're already using, be sure to talk to a medical professional.

The world needs more Bantings.

"The greatest joy in life is to accomplish. It is the getting, not the having. It is the giving, not the keeping.”

This quote by Banting was exemplified in his efforts to ensure the accessibility of insulin. See our previous post for more details on this endeavour!

You are greater than your highs and your lows ❤️

If you don't know what this means, this phrase refers to the high and low blood sugar levels a person with diabetes experiences throughout each day and that these levels and the way the affect the diabetic's day-to-day life does NOT define who they are.

Living with diabetes is extremely difficult, and here at the Banting Legacy Foundation, we help fight diabetes through education.

To learn more, head to the link in bio where you will also be able to donate to our foundation. We depend on donations to continue to offer FREE education and to upkeep the homestead.

Sir Frederick Banting wanted insulin (the life-saving treatment for diabetes) to be within reach for the people who needed it.

With a vision for affordable insulin, Sir Frederick Banting ensured that earnings from the sale of insulin be reinvested in manufacturing.

Despite initial limitations, Connaught Labs where insulin was being produced expanded with funding from both private donations and donations from the Ontario government.

The former University YMCA building was repurposed for insulin production, starting in June 1923.

There was remarkable progress, producing 250,000 units per week and reducing insulin prices by over 50%, ultimately becoming Canada's primary insulin supplier for six decades!

Fred Banting began his ‘artistic’ career as a diversion during his medical practice In London, Ontario (July 1920 – Apr 1921).

In late 1925, Fred struck up a friendship with A.Y. Jackson of ‘Group of Seven’ fame and also joined the Hart House Sketch Club, University of Toronto.

In 1927, Fred accompanied Jackson on at least 2 sketching trips; one on the South shore of the St. Lawrence and one aboard the Canadian Navy ice-breaker, ‘Boethic’ for a 6 week tour of various RCMP posts in the Arctic. The pair undertook many other such journeys in the following decade.

In 2 decades, Fred produced hundreds of sketches and oil paintings. The exact number is not known but an exhibit of his work held at Hart House, University of Toronto, in 1943, included 241 items; mostly paintings on birch panels (8.5” x 10.5”) but some larger works on canvas (21” x 36”).

Many of his ‘sketches’ were assembled in sketch books. Several of those books are held in safekeeping at the Simcoe County Archives, Midhurst, Ontario and together contain over 500 sketches.
