Farewell August. Hello.... September??!! These bouquets were showing off some of the favorite annuals of late summer, and I didn't want to let this pic get lost in my endless camera roll of flower pics.

Time is just slipping away too fast, and as much as I love sweater weather, I'm just not ready to say goodbye to summer yet. So please everyone... let's hold off a little while longer on the pumpkin spice talk... ok?

August Abundance. Loving (almost) every minute of these hectic, hot, long days. It's the kind of month that makes you feel all the feels and can be so very challenging and awe-inspiring all in the same moment.

But when I stop to look around, I see that I'm here on this planet surrounded by so much beauty. Even in a drought. Even with wildfires blazing.

This place has become a little oasis with so many different bees buzzing, I decide I need to learn more about bees. Hummingbirds dive bomb. Butterflies fly. The dog hunts... well, who knows what he's hunting. It's August, and it's beautiful and fleeting. So let's enjoy it while we can, my friends.

Cheers and hugs to all my fellow flower growers, flower lovers, and generally flower-obsessed people across Canada during
Let's celebrate 🌸🇨🇦💐☀️💐🇨🇦🌸

I don't think we ever imagined it could be this dry in Nova Scotia. We haven't had any measurable rain since the first week of June, and wow, it's crispy out there.

Thankfully, dealing with this kind of weather is something we learned about when we farmed in the West Kootenays in BC. The summers were hot and dry more often than not.

I thought I'd share a few tips on how we manage to keep our crops as happy as possible in this kind of weather.

🌸 We use drip tape for irrigation. We set it up every year, and there are times (especially here in the Maritimes) when we barely have to run it. Each row of plants within our beds gets a line, so the water is delivered as close to the plants as possible.

🌸 We mulch our beds and paths when possible. We're using old hay now, but in the past, we have used wood chips for paths and hay, straw, or alfalfa for the beds. It really helps keep the weeds down and retain the moisture in the soil.

🌸 We try to increase the organic matter in our soil by using cover crops as much as we can (and the mulch also helps with this). Organic matter helps to build healthy soil in many ways and acts like a sponge- helping hold moisture in the soil.

🌸 We plant beds of sunflowers throughout the field, and they help shade nearby plants. They don't seem to impact their growth negatively. (We started doing this as a result of w***y nilly planting plans, but realized it was actually a potential strategy to protect our plants! 😅)

How is everyone hanging in there?? Is it smoking hot where you are too?

Let me know if you have any questions about our setup. And, please rain!! 🌧🌧🌧

Do you ever intend to do something and then put it off? And then somehow it becomes a "thing" just lurking in the background, and you still don't do it, even though you keep thinking about it? No? Just me? 😅

That's been my relationship with posting on Instagram lately. We've had so many beautiful flowers growing here lately that it seems a shame not to share more pretty pics of them.

So here we go! These are a few from late June, which already feels like ages ago.

Ok ...just need to hit "post"

Hey friends! It’s been a minute...What started as a short break from social media became a full-fledged hiatus. I stepped away to clear my head and let go of what felt like a rope with a constant, low-level tug, trying to pull me in. Once I dropped that rope, I wasn’t so sure that I wanted to grab hold again.

Although I consider myself to have at least a moderately healthy level of self-confidence, I find it hard not to fall into the comparison trap. Plus, once I'm engaged with social media it can be tricky to stay focused (wait, how did I end up down this rabbit hole?!) and even harder to avoid divisive, anger-fueled discussions (if you can call them that). And when you learn about how the platform operates, it’s not surprising because it’s designed to draw us in and to keep us scrolling.

But on the flip side, I have made some real and lasting friendships through social media. I’ve connected with other growers all over the country (and beyond) and found and shared inspiration with those lovely people. Through these platforms, I’ve also gotten to know our customers and become part of our local communities. And I'm truly grateful for those relationships.

So what’s one to do? For now, I’m easing my way back in because I still feel it can be a meaningful way to stay connected with my community. However, I plan to be much more mindful and intentional about my time here.

I'm here for your suggestions! Anyone have some tips to share?

I sure do miss the dahlias! But I'm breathing a sigh of relief to have them safely tucked away for winter storage. We still have the monumental task of dividing thousands of clumps, but I'm not thinking about that for at least another month! For now I'm just enjoying these beautiful pics and remembering warmer days 😅

How about you? Do you have your tubers safe and sound for winter??

I should have shared this a couple weeks ago, but it's been such a beautiful fall that I've been working steady to make the most of the nice weather!

Before any more time passes, I need to say a huge ❤️Thank You❤️ for all the support we've had from our new community. This year it really started to feel like we're back in the groove and I can't tell you how good that feels.

As many of you know we made a big move almost three years ago (seriously, how has it been 3 years!!) and we've slowly been building our new farm here in Nova Scotia. When we left BC, we left a lot behind- friends and family (who we miss dearly!), our farm infrastructure (ok, also miss that!), but we also left behind our wonderful customers, many of whom became friends.

When you run a small business, you genuinely get to know your customers. You see them regularly and get to know their kids, their stories, and the ups and downs of their days. When their partner comes to the farm stand to pick up a special gift, you know exactly which bouquet they would want. And that is truly an honor.

So, thank you Annapolis! We love it here and we love getting to know you and becoming part of your days. We're excited to see how the next seasons unfold and are really looking forward to new ways to share the beauty of flowers with you!

Swipe through to see a few highlights from this summer!

After a couple of very challenging years, it's such a relief to report that this Dahlia season has been epic. Any farmer or gardener will tell you that some years are better than others, but last year was particularly noteworthy for all the wrong reasons. This year, I'm heading into October feeling strong and like things are back on track.

But my heart is breaking as I see the devastation that my farming friends are facing down in North Carolina, and I feel guilty celebrating while they suffer. One minute, everything is fine- but then it can go entirely off the rails in the next. This life and this business is a fragile one, and I don't know how we best prepare or protect ourselves and our livelihoods.

For now, I'm sending lots of love and virtual hugs to all my farmer friends out there. 🌸🩷🌸🩷🌸

The dahlias are at their peak which must mean fall is really here! It's funny how it just sneaks up. A chilly breeze, a falling leaf, a blanket pulled out of the trunk. Before I know it, we'll be lifting tubers from the ground and putting the fields to bed for the year.

Until then I'll just be over here enjoying every last minute of this beautiful season! I hope you are too 🍁🍂🍁🧡

I can't believe a whole week has gone by since the Regional Conference at !!

As the regional director, I've been helping organize this conference since January, and it was truly incredible to finally be in Ontario and watch it unfold in front of my eyes.

To have the chance to connect (in person!) with so many Canadian growers, many of whom I've only known through social media, was indeed one of the best parts. There's nothing like being surrounded by your people!

Melanie and the entire crew at had the farm absolutely sparkling ✨️ There are no words for how grateful I am for alllllĺl the hard work they put into preparing for this event! They seriously put their hearts into the project, and their pride for Dahlia May Farm was shining through. We could feel the love!

It was such an amazing experience to have the full behind-the-scenes tour of the farm and facilities! From the barn to the studio to the cooler to the farm stand- everything was well thought out. It was definitely a flower-farmer's dream!

It was a real treat to have our friends from there helping out, too! In the second pic, you can see Louise and Courtney harvesting some last-minute blooms just before the start of the design workshop with the incredibly talented and

We had the opportunity to learn from many of our experienced colleagues and I'm so thankful that they were willing to come share their hard-earned knowledge with everyone!

AND, I'm so glad I got to kick off immersed in the Canadian flower community (check out our after-hours project 🌸🚣‍♀️🌸).

Let's do it again, eh?!! 💐🇨🇦

I just couldn’t let ranunculus season go by without giving them a proper farewell and a permanent spot in our grid. Someday I just might scroll back through all our posts and this little snap shot will be a perfect reminder of this spring in Nova Scotia.

We have lots going on, between finishing the house renovation, preparing ground at our new place and tending the main fields we "lease" from our lovely neighbors. But the pace feels healthy. We're eating well, getting good rest and staying relatively sane. The weeds are (more or less) under control and we have a healthy but cautious amount of optimism for the summer. We'll see where it goes from here!

I hope you're all doing well out there and enjoying this precious time of year 💖
