Food Yard has been so supportive and encouraging of this little dream of mine.

They were my very first customers, placing orders even before my first seeds were planted. They then gave me two 50ft rows in their garden in which to grow my flowers...prepping the soil for me and keeping the flowers watered throughout the summers.

They also frequently entertain my two Littles to allow me to work in the flower rows in peace. Taking them on tours around the Food Yard to pick strawberries or carrots or peas... or taking them on bike rides to the park. Sometimes they'll even bring me out a glass of wine while harvesting zinnias in the late summer evenings.

And this year, they gifted me their old fridge - even delivering it right to my door. I now have a fridge in which to keep my blooms fresh until I'm able to deliver them. This is a huge deal and will provide me with more time between harvesting and delivering my blooms and ensuring the longest vase live possible. Not to mention that I no longer have to remove beer from my kitchen fridge to make room for vases of flowers (my partner will be forever grateful for this reason alone 😆).

So THANK YOU Food Yard for all of your support. It means more than you will ever know. ❤❤❤

Look what started blooming in earnest while I was away!

And yes, that is basically a bed of weeds behind the blooms. I just try not to look directly at it and pretend it is not there. That is a genuine flower farmer "trick of the trade" that I just made up right now.

I had a very special time putting together flower arrangements for my sister's CSA members this week! Her makert garden, Root Cellar Gardens, is in Northern Ontario, just outside of Thunderbay. She grows veggies for her customers and for seed, as well as a handful of flowers for seed, so the blooms available for her customers' arrangements were a creative mash-up. They feature zinnias, sunflowers, dill, basil, bachelor buttons, radicchio flowers and oats!

There will be no flower deliveries this weekend as I am enjoying a quick, spur-of-the moment visit to Root Cellar Gardens (a long overdue visit with my sister).

I've still got flowers on the brain out here in Thunderbay though! Yesterday we visited Erica of Northern Creek House and got a tour of the beautiful flowers that she grows in this Northwestern Ontario climate. We then visited her booth at a local market and walked away with two of the most beautiful arrangements I have ever seen! 😍

I'll be back and harvesting blooms next Thursday. Until then!!

Pitch hitting today and handing out CSA baskets at the Food Yard.

CSA basket looks full to the brim with lettuce, salad greens, zucchini and yellow summer squash, cucumbers, snap peas, onions, basil, dill, beans, bell peppers, carrots, celery and I think at least one more thing hidden at the bottom! CSA members will also get to choose some potatoes and garlic! What a haul!!

Can we also just stop and admire this beautiful row of carrots behind me!?!

Where did July go!?! Anybody else feeling like the summer is just flying by?

Well, believe it or not we are well into the first week of August. Which means August bouquet subscriptions will begin! If you've signed up for an August Bouquet Subscription, keep your eyes peeled as I will be reaching out to coordinate your first delivery. :)

I LOVE the funky leaves of this plant. I started these babies from seed last year and am thrilled to see how they've taken off this spring. Can't wait to add these to bouquets. 😊

“A mother's hug lasts long after she lets go."

I'm sure I'm not the only one missing my mom. The pandemic and restrictions have meant I haven't seen my mom since 2019. My heart also goes out to all those who had to say goodbye to their moms this year...This day is so so special but can also be really hard.

To all the moms out there...to those missing their moms, the honorable moms, the women aching to be moms, the fur baby moms and of course the plant moms...this day is for you. I wish you all a fantastic Mother's Day. ❤❤❤

The tulips are coming! The tulips are coming!

Tulips are my all time favourite flower. Growing up in downtown Ottawa, seeing the tulips bloom along the canal after a long winter was always one of my favourite things. They would be bring me so much joy. They were always so beautiful!!

Last year was my first growing tulips. At the encouragement of my partner, I planted 35 in 2019. They were just going to be for my enjoyment...a humble little tulip patch. But with the launch of Whitewater Blooms I ended up selling a handful of tulip bouquets and arrangments and the joy of sharing these beauties was even better than keeping them for myself!

Fast forward to fall 2020. I planted...ahem...over 300 tulips! Lots of yellows for some regular customers who love yellow. Also pinks, purples, reds and whites. Fancy blooms and simple ones.

I tucked them in last fall. Said a silent wish for their safe hibernation. Needless to say I was thrilled to see them starting to poke up!

Whitewater Blooms will be selling locally grown cut flowers again this season. I will be sharing info on how to order soon! Still figuring things out, but the option to order a Bouquet Subscription is in the works... stay tuned!
