A Remembrance Day Story:
The card says, “For promises kept”.
Herbert Collins fought alongside his friend Henry Cohen.
Their promise to each other was that if one of them didn’t survive, the other would take his friend’s surname, a way to honour and not forget the other.
Herbert did not survive but Henry, as promised, changed his name upon his return to Canada.
When Herbert’s body was repatriated, Henry ensured that flowers were laid at his friend’s graveside each Remembrance Day.
Henry has since passed but his daughter Jean continues this tradition.
May all we be as thoughtful and thankful.
