Burlington Convention Centre Cancels Controversial Event Featuring Mohammed Hijab
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Burlington, ON – February 18th, 2025 –

In response to information recently presented to us, The Burlington Convention Centre has made the decision to revoke use of the facility, to the I3 Institute event titled Reviving Roots, scheduled for Monday, February 24, which was to feature UK-based speaker Mohammed Hijab.

Mohammed Hijab has demonstrated a clear and consistent pattern of making inflammatory, derogatory, and demeaning statements against Jews, Hindus, and Christians, as well as others. We believe that this rhetoric and behavior are
inconsistent with the values and principles of respect and coexistence by which the Burlington Convention Centre operates. They also raise human rights and safety concerns.

Our decision to cancel this event comes after careful consideration and consultation with the community, including with the Mayor of Burlington and the Global Imams Council (GIC), who expressed concern over Mohammed Hijab.
The GIC is a non-governmental organization that unites Sunni and Shia scholars representing diverse Islamic perspectives. Backed by top Middle Eastern seminaries, it supports Muslim communities through faith-based initiatives and
education. GIC is a leader in fostering unity, peace and understanding both within the Muslim community and with other faith groups.

The Burlington Convention Centre will continue to take every precaution in ensuring that all future events align with our values. We remain steadfast in our dedication to being a place where all individuals and communities can feel welcome, safe, and supported.
