ROOTS & RHYTHMS
JUNE 3RD | 10AM to 2PM

VHF Coffee is a project by Shawn Mankowske, an Indigenous Yukon Artist and Entrepreneur based in Calgary. After working in and managing various “Third Wave” Coffee shops across North America for over a decade, Shawn decided to take what he had learned and try an experiment into the idea of a mobile space with removable carts that was able to operate year round and anywhere a coffee solution might be required. It was at this point the VHF Coffee was realised, and founded during the pandemic in 2020.

Find VHF Coffee at https://vhfcoffee.com/ or better yet, drop by during the event for a delicious drink!

It wouldn't be a summer at containR without our staple Sunnyside Summer Nights ☀

Not only will it be returning EVERY Thursday starting June 1st, but Keith's Hootenanny has also started a GoFundMe to hire a student in broadcasting to lend a hand over the course of the summer.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Wildfire Development Unit - Interdisciplinary Stream

Facilitated by members of the Major Matt Mason Theatre Collective, the Wildfire Development Unit is now accepting submissions for 2023. This unit supports the work of early career playwrights and theatre creators aged 30 and under. This call is specifically seeking submissions for our interdisciplinary series. We are looking for Albertan artists or groups who are interested in exploring how non-theatre-based disciplines (animation, dance, installation, music, etc.) can intersect with theatre.

This development and dramaturgical program culminates in a work-in-progress presentation in Calgary in late August or September 2023. A more detailed schedule will be developed with the selected artist that fits the piece’s current needs; there is no specific availability commitment required. We are excited to design a unique collaboration alongside chosen artists that includes:
• Ongoing dramaturgical/development support from a facilitator/mentor appropriate to the needs of the work
• Work-in-progress presentation as part of MMMC’s Wildfire New Work Showcase Series presented with support from Sage Theatre’s IGNITE! Festival
• Producing mentorship from MMMC’s production team
• A $1,000 honorarium for each artist or group selected (if a group of artists is selected, one honorarium would be split between group members)
• A modest budget for workshop supplies, creation space, and travel costs (if applicable)

If you are interested in applying, click the link to check out submission details!

Deadline is April 4th, 11:59 pm MST.

Thank you to the City of Calgary for inviting us to the discussion about what it means to be a community space in an Eventful City while remaining conscious of our impact on the environment.

We're excited to carry forward this greener knowledge and take initiative with our fellow events organizers as we bring arts and culture back to the containR space these coming months!

Our Story

containR is a pop up arts and culture hub for people of all ages – championing a 100-mile diet of creative community ideas – developed by Springboard Performance. Together with partner Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association, we brought containR to the Triangle site on the corner of 9th Street and 2nd Avenue NW, right beside the Sunnyside LRT station.

containR is the first city permitted Art Park in Calgary and the land it sits on the first brownfield (empty lot) to be returned to community use in the city.
