BRENT BUTT APPRECIATION POST! 🍁⤴️⛽️

We've done shows with Brent in Cranbrook, Vernon & Fort Mac recently. More coming in March (Alberta) & April (Maritimes). This port to show our appreciation for this Canadian Comedy Icon!

Brent has long been considered one of the funniest people in Canada, with a career in stand-up that stretches into five decades, including being voted Best Male Stand-Up in Canada by his peers. He also created and starred in two successful sitcoms – CORNER GAS (“Funniest Show on TV” as voted by TV Guide Readers) and HICCUPS (multiple Leo & Writers Guild Awards). When you add in two theatrical comedy films (NO CLUE, CORNER GAS: THE MOVIE) and four seasons of an animated TV spinoff, it may seem surprising that Brent’s new venture has taken a rather dark turn.

Brent has written his debut novel – an intense, gritty psychological thriller called HUGE. The story follows three comedians on a rough run of shows through a remote stretch of rural countryside, as their priorities shift from getting laughs to fighting for their lives. HUGE was published by Doubleday Canada and became a #1 National Bestseller.

Calgary, Alberta’s The Ashley Hundred are a psychedelic rock band without boundaries or burdens. Five collaborators from disparate musical upbringing, piling competing sonic ideas onto scampering melodies in a dense forest of harmonic idiosyncrasy.

“There is no visionary [in the band]” according to banjo and steel player Brett Cassidy. Every member contributes to the songwriting and direction of each song. Drummer Michael De Souza brings hip-hop and R&B influence, guitarist Carson Stewart enforces tension into sonic corners with dark jazz chords and clever harmonic pathways, Andrew Franks introduces surreal lyrical turns of phrase, Jordan Moe puts forward an assured rock backdrop with hefty bass guitar, and banjo/steel player Brett Cassidy textures the compositions with country craftsmanship and folk finesse.

Hosting both large and small scale events, The Gateway was most recently nominated for a WCMA and in the past was regularly nominated by FFWD Weekly’s ‘Best of Calgary’ in the category of ‘Best Concert Venue, 500+’.
