#EventInReview: For three years, Contemporary Calgary's LOOK series has brought some of the best modern and contemporary art and artists to the Centennial Planetarium for events filled with inspired creativity, unrivalled entertainment, and an increasingly impressive pedigree of hosts and performers. This past year, the sold out #LOOK2016 more than lived up to its predecessors. With Lainey Lui as host, Adam Gopnik as moderator, and the incomparable actor, comedian, musician, and Canadian art aficionado, Steve Martin as a guest and performer, LOOK2016 surpassed all expectations. The evening featured a pop up restaurant by Chef Brett McDermott of Our Daily Brett, a conversation between Gopnik and Martin on the art of our times, an impromptu (and unforgettable) banjo performance by Martin, Canada's largest contemporary art auction, and a Warhol-inspired after party. The result of these festivities? Over three million dollars raised to support Contemporary Calgary and modern and contemporary art. LOOK2016 took a village. Thank you to all the partners who came on board to see it succeed: OneWest Events Inc., Justine Tyrell, DJ Rice, Intelligents, ATM Rentals, Full Swing Productions, Givergy Canada, Stephanie Leblond, Phil Crozier, WAX partnership incorporated, Rocket House, Shaun Ford Design, Hotel Arts, The Modern Leisure, Steve Smee, FMAV, Holt Renfrew, City of Calgary – Your Local Government, Mayfair Taxi, Servepro, Stephen Ranger, Production Canada, Grumans - Catering and Delicatessen, Designing on the Edge, Shareworthy Content Lab, FM Systems and Backstage Productions. As well, a special thank you to all of the artists who donated work and who created installations for the event. Finally, thank you to the #LOOK2016 committee who worked tirelessly to see this event come to life. We could not have done this without you. Thank you.
As a treasured sponsor of Contemporary Calgary's #LOOK2016, Holt Renfrew was the perfect place to host a premier private shopping night. Guests were treated to artfully crated canapes and beverages, some of Calgary's best shopping, a sneak peek of some of the event's much buzzed about art, and a fashion show featuring curated looks inspired by the verve and spirit of Canada's contemporary and modern art scene. With a portion of all sales going to support Contemporary Calgary, the private shopping night was a cultural, artistic, and fundraising success. Over 450 Calgarians came out to find their perfect 'LOOK' for LOOK2016, and, in doing so, supported the future of modern art in our city. All photos by PHOTOPHILCRO. Special thanks to all our partners who collaborated on this fantastic event: FMAV, Highlander Wine and Spirits, Hotel Arts, WAX partnership incorporated, Givergy Canada, DJ Rice, Shareworthy Content Lab, Mode Models International , The Core Shopping Centre - CORE, and Intelligents!
SocialWest is billed as the "largest social media and digital marketing conference on the prairies". Big on quality, value, and actionable education, SocialWest has quickly asserted itself as one of Canada's top forums for those looking to get ahead of the digital curve. Working with the conference's founder, Canadian blogger and author, Michael Morrison the Boom team created a three-day conference experience where guests were treated to engaging presentations from representatives of Facebook, Twitter, and AirBnB, just to name a few. A sold out success, SocialWest continues to redefine the conference experience and provide Western Canadians with the tools they need to master the digital marketplace. Special thanks to all the partners who came together for this event: Globe Cinema, SOS Charging Solutions, Full Swing Productions, Shareworthy Content Lab, Craft Beer Market, Goodpin, Barcelona YYC, Fiasco Gelato, Neil Zeller Photography, Village Brewery, Big Rock Brewery, Last Best Brewing & Distilling, Wild Rose Brewery, and Proshow!
#EventInReview: Myntex is a great example of the Calgary entrepreneurial spirit at work: young, bold, and committed to doing things in new and exciting ways. This spirit is what the Boom team focused on when planning the Myntex Grand Opening. Pulling inspiration from the vivacious energy of the organization's founders, and Myntex's ridiculously fun office space (which, yes, includes a multi-story slide and arcade machines), Boom created a vibrant, high-energy event where the friends, family and supporters of this organization could come together to celebrate its success. For more details on this project, check out our Event in Review blog post! http://boomgoesthedrum.com/event-in-review-myntex-grand-opening/ Thank you to the wonderful suppliers who came together to see this event succeed: Designing on the Edge, FMAV, Nicole Gourmet, OneWest Events Inc., Ivan Rankic, Leblond Studio, Fox Photo Society and Greg Morton!
Jillian and Sean's wedding at The Foundry was the perfect example of everything we love about weddings: a gorgeous vision, beautiful venue, and, in Derek's words, the chance to celebrate "the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of working with in my whole life". Though tornados loomed in the distance and lightning cracked throughout the evening, this group of fun-loving family and friends were unfazed by the rain and thunder, and the entire evening glowed with warmth and love as Jillian and Sean said their I do's. A greco-roman inspired ceremony flowed into an indie-jazz inspired reception, and guests danced the night away under sparkling chandeliers and candlelight. Finally, this wedding was a dream because it brought together some of our favourite event partners and gave them room to create something truly beautiful (looking at you River Cafe, Designing on the Edge, Paul Hardy Design, PHOTOPHILCRO, One Nite Band, Calgary Show Services LTD., and OneWest Events Inc.). Thank you to everyone who came together for this special day, and thank you most of all to Jillian and Sean for the chance to help bring your dream wedding to life!
The Boom team gets to experience max Christmas this year, working with the Alberta Ballet to produce magical lobby experiences for the holiday classic, "The Nutcracker", in both Edmonton and Calgary - and we love it! We're honoured to have a role in storytelling with Alberta Ballet this year for their 50th season. In this video, you will see some of the work we've done this December to celebrate the story, the company, Alberta Ballet's generous sponsors, and ultimately, the audience experience. Who says it can't start until you take your seat? We'll be decking the halls with sugar plum fairies to ring in the holiday with a packed house of festive families, and we're so very lucky to do so. We hope you're enjoying your own traditions, and we wish you a very happy holiday! To all a good night!
We owe a lot to 2016 - a little thank you note from Derek before we kick off our 2016 Event in Review video series. WARNING: Video contains max baby cuteness.

We're kicking off 2016 by looking back at some of our most memborable events from the last year in our Boom 'Event in Review' series. To start: DreamINN Big! Gala 2015 for Inn From the Cold. The DreamINN Big! Gala supports the vital work that Inn from the Cold does in our community. What makes this fundraiser different? Half of the guests are children. Boom was honoured to produce and sponsor this event. It was a joy to work with the Inn from the Cold team and support their efforts, and to see these families enjoy the evening.
Before we close down the office for Christmas and start posting our 2015 Year In Review videos, a little note from Derek to the Boom team. If you know these ladies, you're one of the lucky ones.
BOOM is so proud to have been a part of Contemporary Calgary's inspired #LOOK2015 event. With the talented Adam Gopnik and Dan Levy guiding over 700 attendees through the program, it's no surprise that over a million dollars was raised in support of modern and contemporary art in Calgary! Watch the video below to re-live this creative spectacle!
