Some sad news, Edmonton: both and will be closing their doors by the end of December.😢

has made its mark as one of Canada’s top 100 restaurants four years in a row. Owner Greg Zeschuk shared that the closure is due to challenges from the pandemic and a shifting market.

📍 Make sure to stop by before they wrap up—dinner is served six days a week, with brunch and happy hour on weekends.

Ever wonder where brewing byproducts go? 🤔

grad student Seyedomid Ahmadinejad has a groundbreaking solution. Partnering with Ottawa’s Brewing, he’s using bioelectrochemically enhanced anaerobic digestion (BEAD) to convert brewery wastewater into renewable biogas. Through BEAD, microorganisms in a low-oxygen environment enhance traditional digestion, producing biogas with up to 80% methane — ideal for heat, electricity, or even brewing itself. 🔋🌍

With thousands of litres of wastewater produced daily, Ahmadinejad’s research could create a sustainable, cost-cutting cycle for breweries across Canada. ♻️🍁

New research is challenging the idea that alcohol consumption in animals is rare or accidental, according to a team of international ecologists. 🍏

Ethanol, found naturally in fruit and nectar, is more common and strategically consumed than previously believed. Many fruit-eating animals are exposed to ethanol through fermentation, and some may seek it out for its energy boost or social effects, like relaxation and bonding. 🍹

While the alcohol content in fruits is typically low (1-2% ABV), some tropical fruits can reach higher levels. 🌴 Animals may benefit from ethanol’s metabolic effects, helping them find calorie-rich food. 🐾 Studies also show that fruit flies use ethanol to protect their larvae from parasites. 🦟

These findings suggest that alcohol’s role in nature is more complex, with potential ecological and evolutionary benefits, and warrant further research into how animals use ethanol for survival and social behaviour. 🔍✨

"We're moving away from this anthropocentric view that ethanol is just something that humans use," says behavioural ecologist and senior author Kimberley Hockings of the University of Exeter. "It's much more abundant in the natural world than we previously thought, and most animals that eat sugary fruits are going to be exposed to some level of ethanol."
