Hi 👋 my name is Alyssa and I grow cut flowers in my backyard. In honour of Canadian flower week here’s a quick intro!

I started during covid when I had a newborn as a way to make money to buy plants for my backyard and give us something to do in the backyard while the kids were playing.

Now we have a ton of knowledge and would love to share this knowledge with others.

At the end of August we will be hosting a live in person only event to talk about the ins and outs of having your own cutting garden.

Some updates around the garden and on the farm.

This week was spent going to garden centres, turning my beloved compost piles and trying to keep all my newly planted seedling babies from drying out in this heat wave.

Alliums are blooming and sweet William are blooming… ranunculus update to come. And peonies are doing their magic.

No fresh flowers yet, but they are coming soon! Stay tuned.

✨Daffodil spotlight✨
The season and flowers I have been waiting for!

We planted so many daff’s in the fall, right as the snow was falling, trying to find all the last spots. And so far they have not disappointed.

The lush doubles and the frilly open faces, the bright and cheerful cupped variety right by the roadside. It’s just perfect! 🤩

They all burst open during the freak warm weather and in fear of damaging these beauties in the cold snap I brought them in. Some have beautiful honey-like scents and some (unfortunately the beautiful doubles) smell not so great. But these are not all. I have more to come…

Happy Cool Flowers season flower friends!

All the waiting has come to this.. I absolutely cannot wait for this snow to melt and to get my hands in the mud.. because of course that’s what it will be with the nearly 2ft of snow!! It’s going to be a disaster before it gets gorgeous but I’m hopeful that all this precipitation continues over the summer and we will have a lush season ahead!

It’s tulip time!
In the last two days I got nearly 1300 tulip bulbs planted, and I’ll be doing my 500+ daffodils and alliums tomorrow 🤞before the rain!
I’m already looking forward to spring!

Premium Fall Bouquet
I just love how the Lord provides. I got an order and wasn’t sure I’d be able to fill it, and in that I got a little creative and also discovered some insanely beautiful combos! These Indian summer rudbeckia are just gold with these red chrysanthemums and some really fall dahlias! Perfection!

I'm excited to announce our first Farm Stand of the season!

With construction on Avenue road, our farm stand would be pretty disrupted this year. But I'm hoping this will be late enough that the workers will be done for the day and we can utilize the school parking lot for extra parking.

✨Ranunculus✨ Pretty in pink and nothing less! I wish I knew this spring would be as long and cool as it has been. It’s been a perfect season for these beautiful ranunculus that need cool nights and warm (but not hot! 🥵) days to thrive! Drip Installation

Drip installation day! We ran 2 drip tape in each of the 12 beds. This year is going to be full of blooms. Having a hard time picking which Dahlia's to order for 2022? Your not alone.

It’s Dahlia shopping time! Time to pick out the dahlia’s to add to my collection. It’s been a challenging time to pick for a few reasons: 1. Limited space as a backyard grower. There are so many beautiful flowers and I have to narrow it down. Eek! 2. Dahlia’s are an investment! Sure, they aren’t that much more than a pack of seeds, but they can be with us for YEARS! And, we can multiply our supply quickly. So, choosing wisely is of utmost importance. 3. They are a time investment. They are “heavy feeders”, so they require a lot of fertilizing all season long. They also need to be dug up, stored and divided at the end of the season. 4. The vast array of colours, shades and shapes can be dizzying! This takes time to comb thru all the amazing vendors supply lists and wait for exactly the right time to order to ensure we get the ones we have been pining and planning for. For all these reasons and more are why we love Dahlia’s and make this an important flower farm ‘chore’.
