that crickets’ chirp-chirp sound that we hear holds a secret? 🦗 It can measure temperature!🌡️

M. Dolbear, a PhD physicist and amazing inventor of the 19th century, noticed that the crickets chirped faster or slower depending on temperature. So he measured the chirps of his local snowy-white crickets, now nicknamed the thermometer cricket, and he published his mathematical formula in a scientific paper in 1897.

The formula is very simple: count the number of chirp-chirps during an 8-second interval and add 5. That gives you the temperature in Celsius, give or take a degree.

In your area, you might be listening to another species of cricket, like the field crickets or house crickets, so that the equation might need a slight tweak, like +4 rather than +5.

So, next time you’re in a tent, and you can’t sleep because of the crickets… at least now you can figure out what the outside temperature is!
