Not many flowers are naturally blue, and just looks at how pretty it is! 💙✨
The stem on the left is super fresh and all of its buds are still tightly closed. In comparison, the stem on the right is still very fresh, but has had the chance to begin opening up. So, if you see tight little buds in store, know that they will soon open for you!

Hey friends! Let’s talk about caring for your succulents that are planted in pots that DON’T have drainage holes.

Remember, succulents want to be 100% dry before they are watered again. How can we tell? To check, you can lift up the moss or stones that are covering the soil (see photo 2.) The soil is lighter, is pulling away from the sides of the pot, and may have cracks along the top. When you lift the pot, it will feel lighter.

Once you have determined that it is fully dry, you want to water it! Water may pool on top of your planter at first (see photo 4), but that’s normal! When your plant gets really dry like that the soil can become a little hydrophobic and it won’t soak the water up immediately. That’s why it is important to water thoroughly, and then allow time for water to soak into the soil and reach ALL of the roots.

After about 5-10 minutes have passed, check your planter again. You can even poke a finger along the side of the container to see that the water has soaked all the way down.

Finally, you want to be sure to tip your pot carefully over a sink (see photo 5) to pour out any excess water. Your plant will not be happy if it is left with a pool of excess water in the bottom if it’s pot and this can lead to root rot.

We’re talking about plant care this week! Earlier this week we posted about knowing WHEN to water your plants that need to be fully dry between waterings. Now, let’s chat about HOW to water those plants IF they are planted in containers with drainage holes.

We recommend placing your plant in the sink, or on a plastic tray. If you are using a sink, be sure to plug the drain first. Pour water the top of your plant, watering thoroughly. Allow the plant some time to sit in and soak up water. Then, set them on a dry surface to drip before returning them to their home.

It is important to allow some time for your plant to soak in the water. The first picture show here was taken after about 5 minutes of soaking. Notice that most of the soil is actually still dry. This means that water has not reached all of the roots! Plants that are fully dry between waterings can become a little hydrophobic, and may not soak up water immediately. That’s why it’s important to allow time for them to soak it all up! Photo two is what you are looking for! Water has fully soaked through and reaches all of the roots. Each plant will be different, so it is best to pop your plant our of it’s pot to check and be sure.

Let’s talk plant care! 🪴🌵🌿
Plants like ZZ Plants (seen in this pic), Snake Plants, succulents, and cacti want to be completely dry between waterings. This picture is a great reference for some of the things to look for when checking if it is time to water these plants:
1) The soil is a lighter colour.
2) The soil is pulling away from the sides of the pot.
3) There are cracks along the top of the soil.

A bonus thing to look for that can’t be seen in a photograph- your plant will feel lighter when you pick it up.
These things are all good indicators that your plant is dry and is ready for a water!

We hope you all have a fun and safe long weekend! ☀️✨
