#545 - At the Cornwall Police Service, we believe in creating a community where everyone feels supported, understood and safe. Today, on World Autism Acceptance Day, we celebrate the uniqueness of individuals on the autism spectrum and reaffirm our commitment to promoting equity, diversity and inclusivity. π
Autism Awareness Facts:
πΉ Autism Spectrum Disorder [ASD] is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person processes information, interacts with others, and experiences the world.
πΉ Autism is a spectrum β No two people with autism experience autism the same way.
πΉ Prevalence is increasing β Autism affects approximately 1 in 50 children in Canada (as of recent studies). This increase is due to better awareness and improved diagnostic criteria.
πΉ Early diagnosis and support matter β Early interventions can significantly improve communication, learning, and social skills. However, autistic individuals of all ages can benefit from the right supports.
πΉ Many people with autism have unique strengths β Some have exceptional memory, strong problem-solving skills, deep focus, or creativity.
πΉ Sensory sensitivity is common β Many experience heightened or reduced sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or smells.
πΉ Non-verbal does not mean non-communicative β Some individuals with autism do not use spoken language but may communicate through sign language, assistive technology, or other means.
πΉ Representation matters β Many successful people, including scientists, artists, and entrepreneurs, are autistic. Advocacy helps ensure a more inclusive and welcoming society.
The CPS is a community-focused service which is committed to building trust and strengthening relationships, with the goal of creating a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.
